Re: Sofa question! No Lisa, you aren't alone,I'm the fun police on sofa/ bed sharing too ....he's not even allowed upstairs.... Although this happened the day after I got back last week http://www.flickr.com/photos/97066992@N03/9797021754/ And then......this happened when I had my cousin round the other day http://www.flickr.com/photos/97066992@N03/sets/72157635608471216/ Same rules apply to outside furniture Dexter!Apologies for displaying my tummy rolls....not a good look! 8)
Re: Sofa question! I'm a meanie as well; but we do spend lots of time having cuddles on the floor. Alice
Re: Sofa question! Glad to see others also use the dog on chair cuddle training technique - good boy Dexter!
Re: Sofa question! Laughed at all of the above. Last night I let Chip on the sofa for the first time, he's never been on before except once when my eldest son encouraged him while they played. He was over joyed at being invited up (the OH wasn't, he had to move to the other sofa) but only lasted 5 minutes before he got down & settled on the rug. I'm going to work on an 'invite only' - but it was so lovely to have him up there for cuddles. I'll be heading off to purchase extra throws later!
Re: Sofa question! Love TM's photo! With regard to the OP - it does not matter one bit if you want your dogs on the sofa. Your house, your rules. Climbing on furniture does not cause dominance problems in case you were worried, though occasionally dogs will resource guard furniture, in which case you have to alter the rules accordingly. For what it's worth my rules are no dogs upstairs no labradors on the sofa (take up too much room) spaniels allowed on the sofa by invitation for TV cuddling purposes
Re: Sofa question! Oh Pippa! I'm shocked! That is discrimination - I am sure there must be an EU rule somewhere contravening Labrador sofa rights ;D
Re: Sofa question! I guess for me it's not so much the dominance/guarding thing...although I certainly wouldn't want to have that be a problem with the pooch. It's more the size issue...I didn't let my Border Collie on the couch for that reason- not letting this monster up!! And the bed, same thing!! There'd be no more room for hubs and me....

But, yeah, they do always seem to take up at least half of any available space, regardless of how big that space is. I think it's Newton's Fourth law or something.
Re: Sofa question! Yup, Labradors expand to fill more than the space available. We've got an enormous sofa here in Cornwall, which Charlie can't fill (he can fill the one in London by stretching out, full length). As an alternative to being able to hog the whole sofa, he always wants the end of the sofa that I'm sat on - it's always a fight when I come back from the loo or refilling my tea. Love it really though.
Re: Sofa question! We have a massive sofa which our two regularly occupy , but they are considerate and leave me a tiny corner to sit on : Definately no beds , Sam is a very large Lab, it would be a nightmare :

He waits outside the door, I'm sure he thinks there's another secret exit, and I'm going to leave him! Had to share these sofa pics. The other Bernese fluff bucket on the sofa is George. He was my darling boy, we lost him to cancer aged 4. Gorgeous dog, much smaller than Alfie, but you wouldn't think it when he was on the sofa! And there's one where Alfie doesn't fit on the 2 seater (and these are the big older type of sofas!) And of course the family portrait from a couple of days ago. Yup, I'm the boss in this house... ;D
Re: Sofa question! Oh my lord what wonderful doggie gorgeousness.....I just want to climb in and have a snuggle ;D
Re: Sofa question! Ah there's an advert for encouraging sofa cuddles if ever I saw one ;D George looks a very gentle soul x
Re: Sofa question! Beautiful picture, so sorry you lost your beautiful George, that must have been really tough on you all at only 4 years old :'( Helen xx
Re: Sofa question! What fab photos TM , just gorgeous , so sorry about the loss of your dear dog, losing a youngster is awful, its almost the first anniversary of my Flynns passing, he was 18 months old so I understand x
