Freddie has always had soft stools he also produces alot! He nearly always goes in the garden but a couple of times this week he has messed indoors. I depoop the garden every day at least once and usually pick up about 10 piles. I have noticed he doesn't just go once when he needs to go he will squat 2 or even 3 times. I brought him home on Arden Grange large breed puppy food and I haven't changed it but I am begining to consider switching him to another brand. I would welcome your thoughts
Is it possible you're feeding him too much? ( That does sound a lot of poo!) I had Molly on Arden Grange at one stage, but I can't remember why I changed. For the last couple of years she's been on James Wellbeloved duck and rice and produces two piles a day, usually 'kickable'.
Large meals - soft stools. Zaba also produced copious amounts on Arden grange. He's now better on Skinners salmon and rice, but his poos are often still two baggers! But he only has two a day. Some bone in the diet really helps firm up the poos, mine have a chew on a smoked bone every day, not for long tho. I also give a little probiotic with every meal. ...
I did wonder if I am feeding too much but I weigh his food out and account for some to go in his kong and some for training. Would it maybe be worth reducing his food a little before I switch brands. He is fed 3 times a day.
The amounts on the bag tend to be far too much. Tatze (three years old) is on less than half what it says on the bag. Mollie (12 weeks) is on 2/3 the amount. We gauge the amount by looking at the dog (blanket of fat covering ribs, not duvet and a good 'tuck up' from above and the side for adults. Pups we slowly increase the amount when they start to look leggy) ...
After a lot of trial and error when he was younger Homer is now on Burns lamb and rice. Some dogs will be better on one type of protein or another. For H he's better with lamb regardless of the make. So if there is an emergency and we've run out and he needs supermarket dinner or I have to buy food for him on holiday I will search out a lamb flavour. Some dogs may be better on chicken or fish.
I agree with lowering the food amount. Same issues like you in the beginning, massive soft stools 1-2x at a time 3x/day, I thought it was the food that came from the breeder, and switched him over to Blue Wilderness Large Breed Puppy, but same effect. Then a scare with Giardia and got paranoid with worms, but still the same. Finally started cutting back the amount of food and his poop became solid! I was following the bag rate and not accounting for the extra treats everyone else at home was giving him. The only time his poo is soft now is after a walk but can still be picked up with little to no residue. Yes he is still a two bagger. He likes to do one massive one and then a dinky one.
