Dexter and I went here last evening........ https://www.facebook.com/pages/Dawgs-Secret/466009816912197 A few individuals have got together and created a dog park on a piece of land about 30 minutes from my house out in the desert. I've avoided the first few gatherings as I'm a bit cautious around Dog parks and I've got to drive on 2 really fast moving 12 lane highways to get there with him only in the boot behind the dog guard. This was the weekend though so the roads were quieter and it was a breed group gathering , Labradors and Golden Retreivers.....there were about 12 in all so it wasn't too mad.Dexter had a great time and I got to practice his recall around other dogs ,although I still felt a bit shy using my whistle and didn't want to look like I was bellowing from a distance so I was pretty close to him most of the time, but he came away from a few multi dog hoolies really well! It was a gorgeous night ,a full moon so I told him he was going to a Full Moon Party! photos are rubbish as of course they were just on my phone!
How lovely that you have all got together to create a new experience for your dogs. I know you struggle with off lead areas so improvisation is a must. Good for you Angela. xx
How exciting Angela! Is it something "legal"? In the sense of, will it be an ongoing thing, or will it stop if the wrong person "rumbles" you all?
Well it's private land and the organisers are there with the permission of the land owner...so I think it will be ok.They were really organised, you had to produce your vaccination record and pay a small fee to attend.I still feel a bit wary,it's catch 22 ...there are so few off lead places for dogs and such a high proportion of undersocialised dogs who are often with inexperienced owners.....I'm open to giving it a try and really want to support a group of people trying to make a difference but am cautious of the all breed sessions when there are a lot of dogs and owners can get distracted chatting ......not that I've got anything about it being a sociable occassion for the humans too .Last night was just right and I'd definately take him along to a similar event .
I think you do right, Angela. That sounds like a balanced approach. Hopefully more successful outings for you and Dex in the future!
