Bud offers a grateful lick to both yourself Heidi, and Bella :)

Today he has managed to pass what may be his only motion again for the day if the last couple of days are a useful guide. Colour is gradually changing. The vets have said to keep him on his chicken and rice until everything is back to normal, and then over 2-3 days reintroduce his kibble. Still having to add water to his meals as for some strange reason he is completely refusing water from his bowl, or fresh water generally unless it is mixed with his food.

Overall, Bud is still keeping us on our toes with his sometimes mischievous, and dare i say it, disobedient behaviour, and playfulness. No other issues to report and we feel the improvement will progress. Hoping he starts drinking water randomly again though.

Thanks again everyone who has shared advice and kind thoughts.x

Ah Tony I'm glad you are seeing improvement...I had months of this when we first got Dex and have been keeping an eye on progress.Youve had all the advice I would have offered....except the pumpkin...not because it's wrong Heidi, just sloppy chicken and rice always sorted us out so I never needed to try.
I know this will have has you really anxious and worried but you've looked after him marvelously ,he's a lucky boy x

Willow and Shadow send licks to Bud. They're also on chicken and rice today after Willow getting me up in the night for a very runny poo, and Shadow being a bit soft yesterday. So maybe they'd best keep their potentially germy tongues to themselves! :D

I like the pumpkin because it's readily available and doesn't require any cooking ;D I've usually got home grown pumpkin that I've cooked down and frozen for breads and pies anyway....so to get out a small bag of it when a pup is out of sorts is always super easy. And it's great for both constipation and for diarrhea too...And if we're traveling, any supermarket will have canned pumpkin on the shelf too.

I usually just start out with giving straight pumpkin for a couple scheduled feedings, and then gradually reintroduce kibble. I don't think I've ever cooked chicken and rice for my dogs actually. ::)

I appreciate your kind words. I do the best i can as i have a large part of the responsibility. I am pleased there is improvement. Just hoping he will begin to start drinking his water naturally instead of having to add it to his meals to make sure he avoids dehydration.x

Bud, in his own way, sends licks back to Willow and Shadow. He sympathises with them and hopes they get better soon. (He will also get back to Shadow's most recent message as soon as he can. He hasn't forgotten :) ) Give them a tummy rub from me.

I couldn't agree more - a huge worry and a great deal of responsibility. But they rely on us and we endeavour to do everything we can to ease their woes. Thank you for your thoughtful words.x

Really?!?!??!   Huh...interesting. I can't say that I've ever shopped for pumpkin in another country...so not sure...but yes, canned pumpkin is readily available around here...usually in the baking isle since it's used for pie mostly...

Hi Bud! wag, wag, lick lick from Bella the American! ;D ;D ;D

Bud wags his tail as a return hello to Bella.

He is hyperactive at the moment as we have just introduced him to an ice cube!!! He was tossing it around and kicking it and biting at it until he finally chewed it up. We have also managed to get him to drink a little more water......by filling the bowl with fresh lukewarm water rather than cold. No idea why he has suddenly refused fresh cold water but at least he is drinking. :)

Re: Sorry...no choice but to be blunt.....liquid poo!!!

    Quick Update:

Had to personally take Bud to the vet this morning following a change in his stools which worried me....they were black! I had no choice but to fight my own fears of being around a lot of people in public places so that Bud could be seen in person. The Practice Manager has been completely supportive and understanding and made certain that we saw the vet i first saw when first introducing Bud to the practice......this vet has the most spacious room which helps me feel less 'restrained.'

Bud is absolutely fine it would seem. He even provided a surprise sample when his temperature was taken. And what does the vet find - soil from our flowerbeds!!!

Generally Bud is recovering well and our vet is not concerned by the evidence he has seen, or the water drinking issue we have. A slight weight drop to 17.78kg is of no concern and understandable. Bud was as lively as ever and one would not even think anything was wrong with him. I have been advised to now start to gradually introduce Bud's kibble over the space of 7 days, and gradually reduce the chicken and rice at the same time. Add water to the meals if this is the only way Bud will drink at the moment.

Quite a morning. But we are both resting now.x

Thank you Helen. And yes, a huge relief. The fact that Bud has not really shown any signs of being physically or mentally poorly made it a lot more frightening to realise that there could have been an underlying problem waiting to rear its head. That thought led to me having to get him checked over - my wife has been the one to mostly cover the vet trips but today this was not an option. x :)

I'm glad the vet has put your mind at rest Tony and Bud is doing well. He should get back to normal in the bowel movement department as you reintroduce his kibble. He could well start drinking normally as well. Kibble is dry (obviously ::)) so they need more water. The rice he's been eating would have quite a high water content from cooking in comparison so he might have just not felt the need to drink as much.

Fingers crossed all is well now. :)

Thanks Jen. You could be right regarding the water problem. Certainly makes sense. Now it's just a waiting game over the next few days. Thankful though that Bud has retained his high spirits - had he been evidently down and lacking his usual demeanour then this would have been a whole lot more uncomfortable to witness.

Well done, Tony, for taking Bud to the vet. You've done all the right things, so it sounds as if Bud's problem was probably eating something he shouldn't have done in the garden when he was nosing around and eating some soil. It can't have been anything really nasty, though, if he's behaved normally otherwise.

There's no quick answer to stopping the garden adventures other than watching them all the time, which isn't very easy. I've just discovered that Tuppence has emptied a wooden container full of bulbs which are just beginning to grow. It was hidden in a border and I'd forgotten about it until I found the wooden pieces scattered around. Fortunately all the bulbs are still intact, so I'm hoping she doesn't disturb them in their new (dog proof?!) home. Most of the time she's very good now, but she has her moments!

I hope Bud connotes to improve when he's back on his normal food. :)
