    Thank you very much.

It definitely does appear to have been something he sneaked into his mouth when i was not looking. He has a very quick method of swiping a mouthful of grass and starting to chew....all i see are little ends poking out of his mouth.

How right you are - watching them all of the time is nigh on difficult. I want to be able to trust him to do the right thing for himself, and he can be very good. However, he does like to have things in his mouth, and if it can't be food then it will be a food alternative (well that's his logic.) Thankfully all of our bulbs that are now showing early signs of life have remained untouched. Long may this remain.

Bud has been hearing about Tuppence and her little lapses into outrageous behaviour. It's hard not to chuckle to be honest but i hope on this occasion the dog proof home for the bulbs remains dog proof.

I'll keep you updated as best as i can. Or maybe Bud himself will relay a few words to Wispa or Tuppence over the coming days. :)

    Final Update:

I think i can now bring this posting to a positive end. Bud has been passing normal motions and appears to be showing more interest in his water. I don't think the concern set in until he just stopped drinking naturally during his tummy problem. And given that he has always been given a clean bill of health at the vets i can only conclude that he was always taking in enough water for him, even if it appeared to be too little in my eyes.

Anyway, we have our Bud back completely now. We got caught in a mini hail stone downpour this morning whilst out walking. He didn't seem to mind at all. But he does seem to be quite tolerant to things that some dogs might not appreciate. He is intrigued by passing vehicles and always wants to chase them, no matter how big they are. He doesn't realise the danger they present if he were to run out into the road, or when he stops still as crossing a road just because something has taken his fancy. (Thankfully i at least am alert to the possible dangers.)

Just to end i would like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who offered me advice and kind thoughts. This soft "daddy" , prone to bouts of worry, is extremely appreciative of the support. (Bud is wagging his tail to offer his thanks also.)

    Keep safe everyone.

Good to hear this, Bud! Well done, Tony, for looking after your little man so well. Willow and Shadow are also back on top form after a day and a half of chicken and rice, so all is well in this puppy household, too.

For the cars, you could maybe use the "look at that" thing I do with Willow to stop her lunging and barking at people when on the lead? As soon as she looks at a person, I click, which brings her attention back to me, so she then ignores the person. Depending on her mood, I'm gradually increasing the time between the look and the click, and she is sometimes looking back to me without the click, which is good progress. If she's over-excited, I'll still click immediately, and sometimes more than once for the same person, if she's especially interested. It may be a tactic to use to teach Bud that looking is fine, trying to chase isn't?

Yep. Pongo tried to chase the combine harvester in our neighbour's field last autumn. That would not have been good for his health.

Glad to hear Bud is back to normal - well done Tony!

I will certainly give this a whirl Fiona as Bud does have a huge interest in nearly every person he spots, let alone comes close by. I sometimes think he wants to run away and live with them!!! If it helps with the traffic, even better.

Glad to hear that Willow and Shadow are better in themselves again. Lets hope for some time now without little health problems :) Thank you by the way for your kind words.

That created a painful image in the mind Rosie. Glad Pongo only TRIED to chase it.

Thank you for your kind words also. Maybe now i can get some proper rest. :)

The idea of this is the dog looks at something exciting, stays calm, then shifts attention back to the handler. So over time that's the string you need to be rewarding, and it's a very useful one to develop - the dog stays interested in his environment, stays calm, but checks back in to the handler.

I wouldn't click more than once though*, and I wouldn't click once the dog is over excited. So I'd get that click in before a reaction so you can build the chain.

This is from "control unleashed". It's a good book.

    * unless you mean she looks again but still stays calm

I'll have to have add that book to my library ;)

Yes, I meant she stays calm... so, for example, the person is a typical target - larger person or group of people, hood up, carrying ski equipment, and she spots them from a bit of a distance (maybe 15m). She looks, stays calm, C&T. We continue to walk towards them, she looks again, C&T as we walk past without responding to them. Is that OK?

The over-excited thing is generally when we're first out on the walk, so she's full of beans... if we meet someone immediately we walk out the door. She will calm down after a few minutes of walking. So, if she's only just started the walk and someone appears, I'll click earlier than I would say, ten minutes further into our walk. That's what I meant - what do you think?

    Sorry to hijack Bud's thread!

Well done, Tony (and Bud). Glad to hear all is well now.

Another thing I've tried to keep the dogs focused when they're distracted by something/someone (particularly Wispa) is to use the command 'walk on' very firmly (and reward while walking quickly!). It will depend on what works best for Bud, or if he's at all like Wispa, which day/hour/minute of the week it is! :)

    Thank you. :)

I actually use the "walk on "term (tends to become "come on" a lot of the time though.) Mainly when i want to quicken the pace, and if i feel he is spending too much time with his nose to the ground!! (I know it is a normal part of a dog's manner but i do feel he spends too much time focused on the ground instead of what is all around him.) Like with Wispa, Bud isn't always in the mood to comply. Bless. Don't we just love them. :)
