My puppy is now 20 weeks old & I would like to know when she can be spayed! Do I have to wait until she has had a season?
Hello, we had our last dog spayed early before her first season, this time with our new puppy we waited till after her first season and then a couple of months. Our last girl had incontinence problems just after and had medicine for rest of her life, it can happen to any dog, Luna seemed to cope better and also she was more grown up so had developed better. Most vets now say to wait , but still lots debate
Most people here think you should wait until the dog is full grown before spaying. There is not really any down side in waiting.
My vet always advises after first season. I have done that now with 3 bitches with no problems. It’s a very personal choice though.
I don't think its a personal choice. It a welfare choice. The overwhelming medical advice says spay when they have physically and mentally mature. For labs it's 18 months to 2 years. I would do.more research and find the pros and cons. In my opinion neutering at such a young age is a mistake.
I am not sure if vets will even do the op at such a young age mine said wait until after the first season and then wait a few months after that. My Springer was spayed at 18 months as a rescue we had to get her done as soon as possible when we bought her home.
Personally, I would not neuter a bitch until she is 6-8 YEARS old. That decision was based on a thorough review of all the available evidence. You are affecting their physiological, immunological and behavioural development irreversibly.
My vet recommended spaying at 6 months. I waited until after her first season when she was about 14 months old.
