My puppy is 3 1/2 months and we bring him to work with us. He gets to the office around 5ish and he goes in his kennel. Wheb I get there at 7 he gets out eats and plays. He stays in his kennel next to my desk and gets out a lot to play and go outside. He is crated at night and we have no issues but I am worried he might have separation anxiety when he gets a little older. On the weekends or at night when we go to dinner he is in his crate so he isn't always with me.
I think companionship and nurturing when one is young leads to development of a strong and independent dog or person. It is the withholding of companionship in my opinion which creates later anxiety. I think you are doing the right thing, and I think as he gets older he will be curious about other people at your work, about his world, etc. and I do not predict anxiety as long as he has a reasonably decent place to be when you can't be with him.
Pongo was with us nearly all the time as a pup, and he is a very confident, self-reliant, happy boy! I'm sure you are doing all the right things.
I think it's less about how long they spend with but that they have confidence you're coming back. So yes come to work, sleep on your feet but occasionally leave them behind when you go to get a cuppa or whatever. You actually have more opportunity to leave them for short periods and prove you come back if you take them with you a lot. (I really hope that makes sense!)
Thanks! Someone told me I should put him in the back room by himself during the day and I tired this morning and he whined. I feel much better when he is next to me. At home he walks around as he pleases and doesn't cling to me too much.
He loves when the employees come in and out. He is almost to the point to where he sits and waits to be pet instead of jumping up on them. ves
