Hey all, I completely overlooked the Stand command when I started training Harvey. I'm now trying to remedy this but, frankly, I'm struggling. He'll do it but only for the briefest of moments before either sitting or moving about (if I try to 'encourage' him by holding my hand under his belly to stop a sit or in front of him to stop a move forward this seems to get him very excited and, consequently, even less likely to remain in the Stand position : ). How do I go about improving it? Any tips?
Re: Stand (for more than a second!) Good to avoid touching or holding for the reasons you've mentioned I'd use a clicker (as it'll give you precision) and mark/click just as he's moving up but before he has fully straightened his legs into the stand. So, before he's moved his feet sideways but after he's committed to getting into the stand. Do that a bunch then start to delay your marker ever so slightly so you can start to build up duration. At the moment he just doesn't realise that you want a stand or a stand without movement. The stand can definitely be a tricky one to teach especially after we've put so much effort into the sit
Re: Stand (for more than a second!) I got a bread board, a normal kitchen wooden one... Shaped him to stand on it with his front paws. Repeat, repeat, added the cue stand...works a dream....from any position now he'll get up, put his feet on the board and stay still. Just got to fade the board now, or carry it around with me.... : : :

I think Julie should get a Shetland pony next not another pup ;D
Re: Stand (for more than a second!) We taught stand with a hand signal, and shaped it by use of a treat moving forward from her nose every time she looked like she was about to sit. It needs to be quite subtle though as you don't ideally want to end up with a step forward. We did it from the word go so it wasn't so hard, don't know if it would be so easy now. Probably doesn't help any. Have you checked out kikopup and YouTube vids?
Re: Stand (for more than a second!) We were taught to tickle their tummy for the length of time you want them to stand - making it gradually longer from a few seconds to start with. Then, when they have got the message, stop the tickling. It works!
