    Hi all,

So since we brought our 3 year old lab home he has been jumping up on the dining table and kitchen counter stealing food and the trash can. Not only is this aggravating but sometimes he gets into things containing chocolate etc... Don't judge to harshly but so far all I can think to use is the e-collar we have and give him a correction when it happens (as long as I witness it of course) but this doesn't seem to be deterring the issue. Any help or ideas?

    Hi Eric,

We're a positive only forum, so we don't condone the use of shock collars. You can read a summary of our views on this subject in this article.

Some of our users will have strong objections to your use of this collar, but like you said it hasn't worked so hopefully we can lead you towards some more positive (and not to mention, effective) methods.

I hope we can help you find the solution you need!

Welcome to the forum Eric. Here's an article that should help you: How To Stop Your Dog Stealing.
Do check out that link Tom gave you to Liz London's great article on e-collars

Thanks for the help so far. I would just like to reiterate before I get more reminders that this is a “positive forum” that I don’t want to have to use the e-collar and that’s why I’m here. I dont use it for training or any other facet of my dogs life however, it’s all I had to use and I would rather do something than have him steal and eat apple cores with seeds from the trash or a plate of pure chocolate brownies off the counter. I was weighing a quick irritant over possible poisoning...

The main thing is to really dog proof the areas that your dog is in. Our 12 yr old lab has gotten bad about counter surfing, to the point that we never leave food on the counters, the pantry door is locked, and she can't get to the trash. She got into her meds a while back and ate a months worth of Deramaxx. $1600 later and 3 days in the emergency clinic, she is fine, probably because we got her to throw up most all it shortly after she did it.
