Charlie was, and is, a horror for this. He is so bad he will retrieve the knobs off the oven if I forget to take them off and put them away in a drawer.

    a) You can train "leave it" - effective only if you see her heading towards something.
    b) You can discourage her from picking anything up - not if you want to encourage her to retrieve though.
    c) You can train "give" and get her to bring you anything she picks up. Because you will reward "give" you will encourage her to pick up even more stuff in order to give it to you for a reward.
    d) You can adopt a novel style of minimalist interior design, pack everything away, and put the log basket on top of the TV.

I went with c) closely followed by d).

My OH has taken to balancing the remote on top of his head when he is watching TV. I bet you think I'm joking about that....

Log basket is sitting at fire ( Empty) lol cause she was nibbling at wood lol lol

will tell Iain when he come s home to put sky remote on top of his head :)

will it stop eventually ( like everything else )

Will try "give" and reward at moment if I can get close enough I drop treat on floor or straight her nose so she no i have something and say drop but its no working

HeeHee - bless 'em. Unfortunately, with Charlie, it isn't something that he has grown out of really. But he hands things over very reliably on the cue "give", and I've learned to keep the house very tidy. So I can live with it.

To train "give" with a dog that is reluctant to hand things over, it's best to clicker train it. It's a terrible faff to do it properly but an approximation will do just fine for your purposes.

First of all, you must have a strong reaction to the clicker, ideally you want her to drop whatever she is carrying and run to you for a treat when she hears a click. (If she doesn't do that, there is another way.)

So sit on a chair and have something she is likely to pick up (that does not sound like it will be a problem). When she picks it up, click and hopefully she'll drop it for a treat. Withhold the click a little and she might hold it for a bit. Then hold out your hand and click for her moving towards you with it. etc etc. When she is putting it in your hand repeat until the whole thing is fluid, she picks it up and puts it in your hand.

Repeat with different objects and in different rooms in your house. Once she is consistent and fluid add a little bit of distance, then a bit more. Then add the cue "give" as she puts things in your hand. And so on.

This is a terrible photo snapped on an old phone, but I love it - it just captures puppy Charlie so very perfectly. "Hello, look what I found in the upstairs bathroom". :D:D:D

Homer will find something left lying around the house and bring it to me, show me what he's got.........then the game starts! He may decide to give nicely or he will move quick as lightning only a few feet away as soon as I hold out my hand. We end the game by going to the treat box in the kitchen. Another game is to take what he's found to the treat box. Nicking the toilet paper is a firm favourite.

Tatze still does it with certain things, like cushions.

I have worked out that anything, anything at all, that she had access to as a tiny pup - she now has in the 'fun' area of her brain! When Gypsy came along I made sure nothing - NOTHING was accessible to her. It worked! She pinches nothing at all. I shall do the same with the next pup.

But, sorry, I have no remedy except to say "oooooooo, what have you got?" in a happy voice and swap it for a treat. Occasionally we swap it for a jackpot too - so that she is always willing to give it up (which is important if they find a poisoned dead rat - as she did once!)

Juno loves to "retrieve" our shoes and bring them to us. It is part game with her but she also goes to fetch my shoes/slippers when going out or coming in so very helpful. You are not allowed to be barefoot in my house - unless Juno can lick your toes :D
