Hello and welcome to the forum. I'm afraid I know nothing about breeding, but I assume that, if the stud is experienced, the owner would be able to advise you on normal practice? Or, even better, your vet?

A good sign that a bitch is absolutely ready is to approach her from the back and gently put a hand on her back, near the base of her tail . If she flags her tail to one side, she is ready to accept penetration , if she doesn't , she isn't . I do believe that for some first time bitches , help is required to hold her steady so that the stud can penetrate and tie . I certainly wouldn't do this without some experienced help , the bitch could be damaged , physically and emotionally . Have a quiet word with your Vet , best and safest thing to do .
