Hi everybody I was wondering if anybody could give me advice on training the stop whistle. I know I have left it a bit late with my 2 but whenever I've tried I get stuck never mind them. Maybe it's because I don't believe it's possible! They will sit to a single peep when walking to heel but when I do sit stay call them then try and stop them 1/2 way with verbal and hand signals they just keep coming and sit at my feet . I know I need to master that before introducing the whistle but to be honest I'm not sure how ! ! Any advice would be gratefully received. I would love for us to master that one and it would certainly make life easier all though I'd be amazed if we managed it. Thank you Jen
Re: Stop whistle Help! Jen great post!im just starting this ,I can run ( well jog) and he will sit on a single blow and stay but I back the stay up with a hand signal .......He gets bored with it because he starts to get up after a few try's ,so I just finish with a really easy one and stop and play with him.you are miles ahead of me but I'll be really interested with what you hear back.....Pippa has posted a video in Totallygundogs( think there is a link in this section..) also Heidrun helped Helen sometime back with this issue...ill try and find the thread for you....
Re: Stop whistle Help! How to progress with stop whistle August 14 by Charlie(Helen) in Gundog training and Fieldwork section ,see if there's anything to help in there x
Re: Stop whistle Help! Not sure if this is any help, but we were told to do it in this way. Athough its from a sit I think it would still help. [li]dog told sit and stay[/li] [li]walk away, stopping briefly half way[/li] [li]leave a tasty treat on the ground at the stop mark (or I suppose a retrieving item??)[/li] [li]walk to the "end point"[/li] [li]call your dog, firmly giving a verbal and visual DOWN command near the treat site[/li] [li]once picked up, use recall command to you[/li] Then simply practice a lot, reducing the treats but keeping the stop command really strong. Thats one thing that Sophie and Lilly are generally pretty good at (as long as there are no rabbits/deer ;D
Re: Stop whistle Help! I have to confess to not practising the stop whistle for some weeks now, but children back at school tomorrow - HURRAY so I am going to crack on with it. Heidrun's version is very simple and clear and that's the one I will use, thank you Heidrun. Good luck with it. Helen x
Re: Stop whistle Help! Thanks Angela for finding the thread for me and thanks Jacqui and Helen for your tips. Going to start to day and persevere. I will crack this. positive thinking ! ;D I ll let you know ,was going to say if but change that to when we have break through Thanks all Jen
