We have been working on the Stop Whistle, followed by the Recall whistle. Also we have been working on the hold after he has recalled back, to get him to wait for a release cue, as intially if he recalled I would be so surprised, stuff him full of sausage then he would dash off for his next adventure! ;D So we have been focussing on a release cue which you can see is "OK Benson". We have been working really hard on the recall as he has a tendency to being a bit of a tearaway! : In the first video I think I peeped more or less at the same time I pressed record, so a bit hard to tell how he responds, the second video it is a bit clearer as he meanders a bit before I peep. Re: Stop Whistle with Recall and hold That's brilliant Kate. Well done Benson. ;D I still think the stop whistle is amazing. I can't believe my dogs stop for a whistle. It's great isn't it when they do. ;D
Re: Stop Whistle with Recall and hold The second video is really good. He hesitates briefly before sitting, but does amazing at remembering what you want, then coming back and waiting until you released him was really good. Well done xx
Re: Stop Whistle with Recall and hold Good going Benson! Very good! It's really, really lovely to see some vids. Brilliant, well done. His stop is quite quick (he takes a second to sit, but a sit is not necessary, but you do want it at first). On the first video, I do wonder what you click for - if I were Benson, I'd say for the sit at the end. That string of stop, recall, sit is not a chained routine, I guess. I would click for the stop, in which case he should run for his treat, if that's a clicker trained stop. Or on the fastest point of his recall to generate more speed (obviously you won't be doing stop-recall very often so I mean generally not in this routine). On the second video you click sometime after his bum has hit the floor and you've told him good dog...
Re: Stop Whistle with Recall and hold Yes you are right Julie, we trained the sit alongside the "stop" whistle, initially it was a sit....then we added the stop whistle, the sit is more or less redundant I guess, he stops well and you can see the sit follows now as a sort of after thought, would like to add speed to the stop and drop the sit but not sure how to do that. The sit comes at the end of the recall, bit like a "full stop" if that makes sense. He will then stay in "sit" until a release cue is given. Good question re: when to click, are we clicking on sit..I don't thinks so,it stems from he is more likely to be in a positon to deliver a dummy if he is in a sit, and also better holding postion. I don't want to reward him actually coming towards us on the recall, but don't know which is the best technique, we have a training session on Saturday, so will ask the question
Re: Stop Whistle with Recall and hold I would find a way to reward a fast stop on its own - if you want to clicker train it I'd do it in the same way as reducing latency for anything (you might start in close first) and click on the fast stop and walk to him to reward. Add other actions (directions including the occasional recall) later - just focus in on the fast stop at first. I'm not sure why you don't want to mark Benson moving toward you on the recall? Clicking for the fastest point of the recall work like a dream for us in term of speeding it up. Perhaps you mean you don't want the exercise to finish before he stays with you until released? I'd just separate the two things (recall and sit until I tell you to do something else) and chain them together later. Probably loads of ways to do it though. Thanks so much for posting videos, I think more people should do this - it's super interesting and I hope you ge helpful comments.
Re: Stop Whistle with Recall and hold Good session yesterday more work on getting a sharper, quicker recall and embedding a robust response to the recall whistle. We are now clicking just before he gets to us, so before he comes to a stop, usually a sit. To generate speed and a quicker recall, we recalled, then ran away from us, Benson thought this was a great game! I felt a bit odd running back on the Bath Race course, but it worked a treat! Also more work on stay, in the down position which went well. Starting group classes soon to work on more distraction work. Then looking at work with retrieving, at the moment we are just encouraging Benson to "hold"a dummy, walk around with it..but no throwing or playing fetch for a while. Will take another video of the recall with Benson later
Re: Stop Whistle with Recall and hold Wow Benson you are really moving on with training, well done to both of you xx
