Re: Stop whistle Thanks all. I really appreciate the interest, the replies, feedback and comments - you really are a wonderful bunch! I can't throw anything right now, unless into water, because I'm both in the middle of steadiness training, and I have to be careful what I do because of his leg. I have no directional control (and I think I'm two weeks before I can start it). But yes, get with a proper programme of stop whistle drills when I can. He is not anticipating a recall at all right now, he is anticipating a retrieve (oh, if only he looked at me like that when he thought I was going to recall him! ;D ;D ;D ). I won't do much more of these free playing stop whistles (mind, to be honest with a pet it's what I want), although they are suitable for Charlie (his obsessions are dummies and other dogs, as you can see from the vid, I struggle to get him interested in going for a hunt when I have a dummy).
Re: Stop whistle I threw the tennis ball toward my dog for him to catch or land just in front of him; steadiness was not required and it didn't spoil his steadiness. If Rourke knows I have a dummy he is around me all the time, makes it very difficult to put a blind out. I can't put blinds out before I take him out as I have nowhere except a public common. I so envy you the field you have
Re: Stop whistle That field is super good. It's national trust maintained, and given to the people of the town to use. It's busy at the weekend (was a nightmare tonight : ) but early or late in the week it's quiet. Mind, once last week, some walkers hurried to catch me up and handed me the dummy I'd put out. I think they thought I was littering! ;D ;D ;D
Re: Stop whistle Oh yes, I know that one, you put a dummy out and someone calls out "you've dropped something" The most frustrating thing I find is that I am completely alone and have been for a good half an hour, I put out some blinds and just about to send the dogs, when someone appears!!
Re: Stop whistle Yes, 20 minutes waiting for the dog to take his eyes off you so you can drop it, then a rambler picks it up, waves it around, shouting "cooee! Is this yours!?!" ;D ;D ;D
Re: Stop whistle Used my stop whistle for "real" tonight! I know to all the gundog people that means stopping in some complex manoeuvre involving a pigeon (or whatever) but in gundog strictly pet training it means walking round the corner to find german tourists having a picnic! With very smelly sausages! I am pleased to report it worked. 8) 8) 8)
Re: Stop whistle Was dead chuffed! And they were very lovely people (once Charlie was back on lead!). He got a bit of sausage! And was pleased to find out they are sold by the local butcher. So I'll be stocking up for future stop whistle training. ;D ;D ;D
Re: Stop whistle Well done Charlie. ;D I would say for a pet gundog a German sausage picnic is possibly the ultimate test for the stop whistle. Excellent work. ;D
Re: Stop whistle
I would say for a pet gundog a German sausage picnic is possibly the ultimate test for the stop whistle.
I know! We so need a proper pet gundog field trial to display these key skills - with tests involving kids with ice cream, picnics, joggers, discarded chips and so on! ; ;D ;D ;D
Re: Stop whistle Great success!perfect stop and an invite to the picnic!something for, everyone there!well done x
