Hi guys, I’ve got a 15 week old Labrador called Oscar and have got a few questions if you all wouldn’t mind! I’ve tried distracting him with a toy and leaving him when he starts biting and jumping, but nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Also I’ve read that stroking them makes them want to bite more, but how do I show him affection if I shouldn’t stroke him? Also does anyone have any recommendations on heavy bowls as he always picks his up and tips them
Hi Erin, Sorry to hear your having trouble with Oscar. It does get easier and believe me when Luna was that age I was at my whits end and ready to give up. You are doing everything right and just need to continue and persevere. You will notice that all of a sudden it will click and Oscar will understand. We now have an antler for Luna and although she doesn't get mouthy in the house anymore unless we wind her up during play time its a great way for her to calm down. We didn't get a heavy bowl but we got this for Luna as even before we picked her up she enjoyed picking up the water bowl or knocking it over! At the start she tried to take the bowls out and did succeed a couple of times when empty. With this she is unable to knock it over but sometimes still manages to get water everywhere think I just need to invest in waterproof socks ... https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06XRXQQZV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Thank you it’s good to know it won’t last forever! Just wondering if you have any tips on getting the harness or collar on without getting them wound up (bitey)
For the harness if it goes over his head make him sit. Give a treat for following instructions then have a treat in one hand and as you feed him it slip the harness over his head at the same time. Luna still gets sooooo excited when she is going out. It can take us a couple of tries to get her collar on but we just keep making her sit and 'leave' the collar - she likes to try and eat it sometimes! You will know when you have your pup engaged and when they are listening to you, this is when you will get the correct behaviour you want. Be patient and don't back down, it takes a lot of repetition for them to learn.
