I was just wondering if any of you put sun cream on your dogs? We used to do it with the white dogs in the kennels - ears, nose, groin and stomach etc but not any of the others. With the lovely weather at the moment I'm wondering about putting some on Penny? We spent the entire day outdoors yesterday and me and my OH both came back with a bit of sunburn despite wearing sun cream ourselves. Penny's nose is fairly pale, it was black when she was a pup but has added to a pinkish brown. But the end of the day it was looking quite red and and I'm thinking maybe I should have put some cream on her nose? What do you guys do?
Re: Suncream If we go to the beach in summer we put sunscreen on Obi's nose. Just the human stuff, 30+ strength. It is a good idea if your dog's nose is not fully black
Re: Suncream I must admit it is not something I have ever done. Not sure it would stay on long enough without being licked off anyway! I do use a sunblock on my horse's nose though. It is pink and he would get terrible sunburn without protection. The dogs actually spend very little time out in the very strong sunshine. One of them has a tendency to overheat very quickly which is very dangerous, so I exercise them very early in the morning and last thing at night. They spend the day chilling in the shade of an orchard. 8)
Re: Suncream Sorry I can't help, Rileys pretty heat intolerant so on warm days he seeks out the shade and we only walk morning and evenings unless there's water involved. Also his nose, like the rest of him, is jet black! I know we used to put suncream on horses sometimes though!
Re: Suncream I do use it - but have only seen the pet stuff in SPF 15. I don't think it's very practical, and also finds Charlie over heats, so find providing shade is best.
Re: Suncream At the kennels we used to use children's sensitive waterproof factor 50. I think Penny might try to lick it off but I might try putting some on her today and see how she goes.
Re: Suncream It's better than nothing... Apply it half an hour before going into the sun. Australia is the skin cancer capital of the world so we all have 'slip, slop, slap'* ingrained into us.... *Slip on a shirt, Slop on some sunscreen and Slap on a hat. Shirt and hat optional for dogs.

Re: Suncream Havent ever used it on the dogs, I tend to take them for a very early swim , they can go outside in the garden until mid/late morning , then they stay inside, going for another swim late afternoon/ early evening .Millie is reasonably sensible and will lay in the shade in the garden , Sam is the one who will lay flat out in the sun , if we dont stop him
Re: Suncream There's an opportunity here for someone to make a mint...suncream for dogs! Can anyone think of a good product name?, ha
Re: Suncream There are products for dogs, in the UK anyway - sticks and wipes. http://www.medicanimal.com/product/~product_id=107670
Re: Suncream I don't when we go out early morning ie 5.30 am ;D But part of Dexters toilette after his breakfast is a wipe over of the nose and ears with a sunscreen wipe....he's in the sun everyday here.He has the common sense of a lump of wood when it comes to the sun,he would lie in the full on pelt of 40 degrees if I let him....he has to be told to lie on his blanket in the shade.he kept getting up into a sit at the weekend and we realised its too hot for him to lie down for any length of time on the flags( the shady part of the garden) so I'm going to invest one of those beds that are off the floor and Jaqui kindly reminded me about chillax mats which I'm going to look into today

Re: Suncream Lola would definitely try to lick it off. She tries to lick it off my son!!! Luckily for us Lola and my son (who stick like glue) don't do well in the heat so stick to the shade or in the water table with the parasol to cover them. If she liked to stay in the sun I probably would put factor 30 or higher. I'm sure the all knowing Google will have an all natural option so if it was eaten wouldn't cause upset tummy.
