There are no words that will make the pain go away. Only with time will you be able to look back with smiles and affection at the time you spent together without that horrible gut-wrenching feeling of loss.

Kate - I didn't know this service existed. I don't know how you do it; I'd spend the entire time in tears for the people who call and their dearly loved pets :(

Give yourself lots of time to grieve , don't try to stem tears , talk about your loss, it does help , a lot . I am so very sorry , these dear dogs break our hearts don't they ? Thinking of you x

So sorry to hear you have lost your beloved dog. We lost our beautiful cocker spaniel Sweep Dec 2013 aged nine and three quarters after a brave battle with lymphoma. I felt exactly the same. These dogs are part of our family and it is only right we mourn for them. I couldn't face seeing another cocker in the house so got Milo, a choc lab, several months later, after vowing never to have another dog.
    Take care
    Sue x

I knew this was coming but your never ready. Today I had to have my choc lab Molly put to sleep. She had lung disease a bad heart and an enlarged spleen . She was literally drowning. She had a couple of bad days where she couldn't settle and coughed and painted all the time the vet took her for an xray and her lungs were full of fluid which we had been treating with 6 fluid tablets and 2 heart tablets a day for the last couple of weeks but sadly she took a turn for the worse yesterday. This is my 2nd loss in 5 weeks. I am numb with grief I am hoping my last dog a border collie stays well for a few more years yet I need time to recover from this loss

I'm so, so sorry :'( You must be feeling totally bereft. Knowing it is coming doesn't make it any easier at all, I don't think. Grief is grief.

Big hug to you at this truly difficult time.

Massive hugs. It's been a terrible few weeks for you. I agree with Rachael; the knowledge that the end is coming does nothing to diminish the grief. The more we loved that beautiful creature, the deeper the sense of loss. I wish you many more happy years with your border collie, who I hope can give you some comfort at this time x

I find this poem helps at times like this:

    A DOG’S PRAYER

If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep
Then you must do what must be done
For this last battle cannot be won

You will be sad, I understand
Don’t let your grief then stay your hand
For this day more than all the rest
Your love for me must stand the test

We have had so many happy years
What is to come can hold no tears
You would not want me to suffer so
The time has come, please let me go

Take me where my need they’ll tend
And please stay with me till the end
Hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see

I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me
Although my tail its last has waved
From pain and suffering, I’ve been saved

Please do not grieve, it must be you
Who has this painful thing to do.
We’ve been so close, we two, these years,
Don’t let your heart hold back its tears

    Roger

Lost my old girl just over two years ago too. Here's a poem that helped at the time and is how I feel when I walk Tarkie and Lochan in some of Remy's old favourite places. It's by Ben Lampman, and is called The Best Place to Bury A Dog.

"There is one best place to bury a dog.
If you bury him in this spot, he will come to you when you call -
Come to you over the grim, dim frontier of death,
    And down the well-remembered path,
    And to your side again.

And though you call a dozen living dogs to heel,
They shall not growl at him, nor resent his coming,
    For he belongs there

People may scoff at you, who see no lightest blade of grass bent by his footfall,
who hear no whimper, people who may never really have had a dog.
Smile at them, for you shall know something that is hidden from them and which is well worth the knowing

The one best place to bury a good dog is in the heart of his master"
    [/quote]
