Anyone got any good tips, or links to the best way to train this?

Bramble needs to understand the cue to spin...and I have until next weekend to teach this!!!

    Many thanks!

    Um...

All dogs spin one way better than the other (smoother, tighter turn). Figure out which way is easier before you start and work on that one first.

I used food to lure Ella. Brought her nose towards the inside of her back leg. Then faded the lure.

I used the cue "spin" for one direction and "twist" for the other.

Oh, I started immediately infront of me and then moved it to the heel position. I'm still working on our next step (we have a Rally sign that requires the dog to spin at heel without you or the dog breaking stride)

Yep I lured too, with a treat and then with my target hand. Then the hand leading her round got more minimal and gradually morphed into the hand signal for the spin. I only got round to teaching it one way, but she was very quick to pick it up.

Gosh that would look impressive! I would definitely fall over the Pig’s gangly legs trying to do that!

This is one thing we can do!! :D

I just lured. I still use a hand signal for him. Like @Emily said the second way was harder! We have spin then "other way".

If we get it right I'll post a video of it. And possibly the leg tangling out takes too :D

We have twist (anti-clockwise), twirl (clockwise) , and spin (clockwise round twice). Can't remember how I taught it - probably a lure.

I found it easier to do a 'spin' while the dog is walking at heel, do it with a lure. Then try the same in front of you with a lure and body language. Rourke can now do it with no lure, no body language and just the word :D

Coco learned spin (clockwise) with a lure, then same movement without the treat, now he can do it with a little spin of the finger and the cue "spin" - I hoped to get him to spin on the door mat to clean his feet....it didn't really work out, so I gave up. Perhaps we'll work on it again. Would like to do the spin at heel without breaking stride - that'd be fun.

I'm quite keen on the spin at a walking heel as well, I might have a try at that.

I lured too but started while we were walking at heel. Same for spin the opposite way, which are NIPS, while heeling on the other side. Fade the lure, keep up the hand movement, reduce the hand movement a bit, well a lot as the first luring motions were big circles.

I've used luring with my lot. Shadow can now spin anticlockwise on just a verbal cue, the girls still need the visual. I found it hard with Willow because she really dislikes being loomed over. If I hadn't left my telescopic target stick in Spain, I'd have used that with her. Interestingly, Willow is also far better turning right and the other two are stronger left. I find that keeping the treat low and moving it slowly is key. If she's finding it hard, start by C&T a turn of the head, then the shoulder and build it up slowly to a full turn. Once you've clicked, she should go to take the treat, and you can hopefully lure a bit more - remembering that what happens after the click and before she gets the treat is being reinforced, too.

Red will spin anti clockwise on a small low stool (a biggish book will do) as we learnt that at training - so she can’t sit. I used to lure but I just say ‘circle’ and she will spin as many times as I want her too - only ever do 3 at a time as don’t want to over do it. I then treat. She will now do the same thing without the stool. Might be worth considering the stool if Bramble continues to sit.
