My father in law had a stroke 6 months since, and although he is making a fantastic recovery he is having a little trouble with his dog. He can't walk her as much as he used to and she suffers separation anxiety from my father in law. I walk her when she allows but other times she won't leave his side.

She is a rescued bait dog and has clearly had litter after litter of pups. As a result she is weary of people and dogs. She has come to trust me and my children but can't be around other dogs as it causes too much stress for her.

Like I said I walk her when I can (just me, no children or Lola) but her claws are starting to tap on the floor and look a little brittle.

She has never needed them trimming so I'm introducing the clippers slowly. I have them with me when I'm sat having a coffee and click them every once in a while. She is ok with this and when I click them close to her feet.

I'm afraid that with her claws being brittle it may hurt her and put her off and undo the bonding I've been doing. Can anyone offer any advice or reassurance?

I wasn't sure what forum category this would fall under. Sorry if it is in the wrong place

How about training her to use a scratch board instead? Coarse sandpaper on an angled wooden platform. If you go onto the Positive Dog Husbandry group on FB, you'll find info in the files there.

Benson has got a couple of very brittle nails, one is due to an injury. The dog groomer suggested using one of those dremels and literally just doing a few seconds a week. The clippers can squeeze a brittle nail and can cause discomfort as well as splintering of the nail :)

That was my fear beanwood. The last thing I want is for her to feel pain. How long will it take for her claws to recover?
