Do you guys test your Lab's eyesight? I found one test online, which involves sitting the dog down, placing hand about 50cm away from his eyes and then moving it quickly forward towards his head, stopping 15cm or so in front of his eyes. Apparently the dog should reactively blink... But our 10 week pup didn't. Conclusion: Either: 1. Our pup has an eyesight problem. 2. The test is rubbish. 3. Our pup is so brave and/or trusting, that he doesn't blink at a fast-moving friendly hand. Thoughts?
I had a quick look for dog eyesight tests out of interest and one site alone gave 5 different tests. I've never thought to test any of my dogs as they have never given me cause for concern. What the websites do emphasise is that if your dog fails the 'blink' test, or any of the other tests, or you have any concerns over eyesight to make an appointment to see your vet as soon as possible.
If you have any concerns about eyesight you shouldn't wait a couple of weeks until the vaccination appointment but see the vet now.
I hear you Jojo83, and that was immediately my thought, we put our puppy's welfare first. Today I've been checking his vision at different distances, with different objects, some moving, etc., and the vision seems perfect. It's just that he doesn't react to the blink test. We'll discuss it tonight.
I realised I haven't come back to this thread. For completeness of the story, I should The vet said Nelson's eyesight is just fine. Apparently puppies can be a bit slow to react to the blink test. Recently he seems to have the eyes of an eagle, spotting loose kibbles around the place. A relief for us here
I which there was a simple test for visual acuity. While Tilly has always been very good catching balls and frisbes, she has never been a visually oriented dog. She does not watch birds, small animals etc. Cooper and Ginger, our 1st lab were very visual. Cooper watches TV and sees birds in the air. Ginger could spot me (out of a group) coming out of the super market when she was sitting in the Fiat Spider 200 feet away.
