I would have been scared too. Big hugs. And a whole (low fat) roast chicken for Dexter.

Thanks everybody,I'm still gutted and having a weep about his tail but he's had a really neat, tidy job done on it,I was really scared to see it to be honest :-\ x

I'd bet it just becomes a feature of your much loved wonderful boy, and the journey you've been on together, and you end up loving it as part of him.

I hope dexter makes a full and swift recovery, with no excess wagging or tail bashing.

There is a GSP at my dog training club that has a 1/4 tail as he kept bashing it and breaking it open, it does not affect him, and he still is happy and even waggier than before.

Thanks Annabelle ,I have seen a good display of a full body wag already when we picked him up,I think Barbara or Jacqui mentioned a neighbors dog that is skilled in that category too....when Dexter is feeling better, maybe I can train him to hula hoop!hes looking like he could have the moves!

Or teach him to body wag on command, as that would be an amazing trick ;D

Angela, a few years ago my spaniel Misty developed a rare form of cancer and had to have her rear leg amputated. I remember picking her up from the vets after the op and just bursting into tears and then sitting at home with Misty on my lap crying my eyes out. Then I remembered what the vet had told me that dogs don't look in the mirror and think 'Oh God, what has happened to me', they just adjust and get on with life. And that is exactly what Misty did, she adjusted to the new situation in no time at all and resumed her life again and she enjoyed all the fuss and extra attention she was getting all of a sudden not just from me but from everyone she met.
Take care of yourself and give Dexter an extra hug from me. x :)

Oh Heidrun your poor dog,and poor you I can totally relate to that feeling, but I must count my blessings, this is a tail not a limb.you know ,I met a man in the vets before whilst I was waiting to pick dexter up and he told me about his dog who lost a leg to cancer and all in all through her treatment she was kept in at the vets for 7 weeks........it's a good lesson in picking yourself up and getting on with it....as with everything there are always people and their animals having a worse time that you.
It's been another huge learning curve to us in the world of dog ownership.....I have always, always empathized with problems with friends and family and their pets but never realised the true extent to which it affects you ........

I am sorry that you have had to have so much tail taken off, but you will find it useful ;D The coffee cups and wine glasses will stay on the coffee table, there will be no mud and no blood on the walls, your leg won't feel it has been hit by a whip! I lived with GSPs for 25 years and then to have dogs with tails was a bit of a nightmare!

You have been through such a tough time, you need to relax now and enjoy life once more. Looking forward to hearing how Dexter gets on.

So glad he's home and doing well. It is a shame that poor Dex has had to go through this, but really it's not his tail that makes Dexter who he is. It's his heart, and that hasn't been affected one bit! :)

I agree, you and Chris deserve the treats much more than us - i hope the three of you are able to enjoy a relaxing evening without too much cone-bashing or tail-worries!

Interesting that they were able to get to the bottom of the bleeding issue - this is a good thing to know, in case of future emergencies (of which you won't have one for a LONG time, so no worries ;)).

    Hugs to you all.... :*

PS Simba wants to tell Dex all about the joys of eating the cone but no worries, I'm not letting his paws anywhere near the keyboard.....

Obi is a big proponent of the Full Body Wag. Tails are surplus to requirements - it's all about groovin' with your head and your butt and the bits in the middle. :) I reckon that he and Dexter would make a good hula team.

    Re: The appointment is made.....

Sorry folks......his lordship is crashed out asleep so I've been getting a bit of baking and freezer cooking done for imminent visitor arrivals!an open plan house had its downfalls when he was a pup but it's a godsend when I need to keep my beady on him!
Helen ,I had seen how many people have read about my lovely yellow boy,we are so lucky to have so much concern and well wishes.I know I've rattled on and wailed and panicked on here but I hope if anyone ever finds themselves in the same position that some of it will help...please god they don't though.
Dexter had a really good night,I'm saving the calmex tablets for half an hour before bedtime and he settled down well ......I'm staying with him at night until Wednesday when my friend and her family arrive..now that the cone prevents him getting to the wound I can actually get some sleep!he does go for it and I'm on high alert for him devising alternative methods...the vet said to watch for rubbing on the walls, carpet or furniture....luckily he settled on his fat boy which has beans in it so everytime he moved I was aware and could check what he was up to.....
His tail wound is lovely and dry and clean and neat....bless his heart, since he came to us we've taught him to sit at every kerb and when we stop to talk to people.....his walks have taken on a bit of a comedy turn as we try and walk round the neighborhood in circles ,and I charge past people apologizing for not being able to stop......I'll loosen up by tomorrow I just don't want him to sit outside for now as the stump ( :'()rests on the ground perfectly....it's totally closed unlike before but I'm no less worried about an infection!
We are back to the vet tomorrow, taking it a day at a time I'm quietly hopeful we are moving in the right direction but I don't want to tempt fate......
This poor lad has been in a cone for 14 days....with 8 more to go.....we let him have time out for walks and meals but other than that he's in it permanently ,I feel so sorry for him and just keep telling myself that we will make it up to him....he must wonder what's happened to his life :(
