Good for you on looking on the positive, Angela!! ;D

I know what you mean about worrying about taking it off and not getting it back on....I was so afraid of that!! Which is one of reasons why we went to the two-cone system....put one on OVER the old one then take the other one off!! Of course I had to do that because of the issues I was having with the cone falling apart and the duct tape chewing..... :p :p  :-\

None of which is going to happen to YOU, Angela! Dex is going to sail through recovery and be a cone STAR!!

    :) :) :)

After our neighbour's dog was neutered he was very restless for a couple of days. They used rescue remedy on him, which seemed to help.

Poor old Dexter, do hope things look up for him soon! Luckily he has you to look after him Angela, you are very devoted and dedicated. :)

    Hi Angela

Just wondering how you are keeping the lamp shade on?

The first time Murphy had one I threaded his collar through it which did make it inconvenient to take on and off.

The second time i used a crape bandage to tie it on much easier for on and off. I also taped some cotton wool around the neck part with micro pore to make tha edge softer. I can't remember why but he'd been shaved on his neck and it rubbed.

In a day or two your Dexter will be back to normal then you'll be worrying about keeping him calm but you'll know he's on the mend. :D

Jen it's tied on with a thin cotton bandage so it will be easy enough to remove tomorrow to give him a break.
Can I risk all testing all your patience again?im a bit worried about his castration wound...he had a red line running along down the line of stitches this morning, which has receded now but is still visible .the stitching looks a bit uneven to me and I've just checked again now( Er can't count how many times today I've looked :-[)and I'm sure I can detect a glisten........he's on antibiotics but they were discussed more in relevance to the tail op.....I took a photo this morning,if I'm not happy with a comparison tomorrow, you know where I will be....
Also, are we walking him too much 30 mins in the morn ( 45 today because it was really quiet and early and he was pretty hyped up to get out)30 mins before dinner and 20 before bed.....steady lead walking only.
I'm not letting him in any bushes, sand or lying down anywhere other than house ....he was lying down in the garden though :-[ before trying to chew a toy when I nipped away for only a few seconds....please,please,please send anything to me but don't let my dogs wounds get infected :'(
If this was Facebook you would have all I friended me by now,I know I'm dreadful....but I'll stop soon, promise! :-[

We'll listen forever! As you would to us. Can only send hugs and licks though, as no experience.

Is the castration wound very long?

Don't worry Angela to be honest it's good to know somebody worries as much as me.

I'm trying to remember back to when murph had his bits off! The red line I'm not sure about.

The antibiotics will cover both wounds.

Walking should be ok. I was told not to let him run and jump. I think the problem with exercise is it can cause swelling so again a photo now is a good idea but swelling doesn't necessarily mean infection.

As I've mentioned I live on a farm so in wet weather it was impossible to keep the stitches clean outside.
I got a spray bottle and put saline solution in it and squirted the stitched area so I wasn't disturbing it by bathing/ touching.

It seems like a long time now but 2 weeks will pass. Hang on in.

Thankyou girls....it's about 1.5 inches and 6 visible stitches....I'm doing his tail with a beta dine solution every morning but the vet just told me to make sure the other wound is clean and dry .....I'll not mess with it at all tonight and see what it looks like in the morning.....you are right Jen ,feels like a lifetime.theres a 3 day holiday here next week which with the weekend means Chris is off 5 days with me.....day in work then off again so we are both around a lot.....I'm not focussing on the downside that the vets will be closed ....that's what out of hours tel numbers are for! X

very behind on the forum so just seeing this, poor Dex and poor you! glad he seems to be healing well though. and good on you for looking out for him so much he is one lucky boy having a mum like you. When brods got The Snip i decided he would choke hinself on his Cone in his crate at night so spent seven nights sleeping on the floor next to his crate being woken up every hour by his cone crashing into the side of the crate when he moved.he stayed sound asleep :D .i feel for you! licks from cuillin and brodick for a speedy recovery...

Yup infection was my biggest worry and I just about lost whatever sanity I had around Day 9 when it got red and puffy and was showing some leakage.... And the next day Poof! No problem-o and we didn't look back. I think God took pity on me, I truly do..... :p

    Re: The appointment is made.....

    Hi everybody,
I've tried to shield you from the hourly reports of my dogs nether regions but I've just got back from the vets so thought I'd let you know what she said.
I've seen blood every morning except one on his tail wound this week ......I've just continued dressing and cleaning as instructed with the addition of bubble wrap on the outside of the syringe splint for extra padding ;D as I couldn't see any tearing of the stitches or signs of infection....so couldn't see what the vet could do that I couldn't...
So I had a bit of a meltdown this morning ,having the castration wound healing so well alongside the tail wound gives me a visual comparison.....
Anyway the vet says it is healing well, and there's no need to worry.there are 4 stitches in it and the healing is really good around 3, she thinks the dog end product is causing the problem by irritating the area around the 4 th so she has dressed with gauze to prevent this and had a smile at my bubble wrapped invention.it's clean, free from infection and she says I should be happy with progress.
Tail stitches will come out a few days after the other wound and it's a holiday here next week so the vet has given me her own mobile number as she said she only lived locally and if I suspect anything isn't right to give her a call and she'll nip into the clinic to meet me.....how lovely is that !
Feeling much much happier tonight, might even sleep in my own bed tonight ;D hope Chris doesn't choose tonight to have a right good old snore! ;D x

Angela you have done a great job with Dexter. A few more days and it will all be over. Sleep in your own bed and if Chris snores kick him out and let Dexter in ;D
So pleased all is going well I know how very worried you have been and still are. Good boy Dexter. Helen x

That does sound positive! Well done, it sounds tricky to get the tail one healed, and I'm sure your diligence has prevented problems. Agree it sounds like Chris' turn to be on nightly tail watch if necessary!

Thought about you today "Dexter" :D It was my husband's birthday and two daughters plus grown up granddaughter came over, both Labs highly excited and blood everywhere, looked a bit like a slaughterhouse in places! I think it was no 1 Lab's tail, though no 2's tail is overly long and when he wags it is like a whip.

No blood this evening, all is quiet again.
