    Hi all,

Very excited to be collecting my new puppy on Sunday. I’m after any tips you may have on managing that first journey. It is 110 miles, 2hrs if by motorway, and longer if using A roads etc.

    Thanks.

Hi Woodie, welcome to the forum :)

    Congratulations on your new puppy!

Most puppies will go to sleep on a long drive home from their breeder. I'd line the passenger footwell with old towels in case of accidents, pop some spare towels and a bin bag on the back seat in case you need to switch them over at any point, and just head for home!

Good luck - let us know how you get on!

If you can collect early in the morning that would be better, it gives your pup more time in the day to settle at your home. I had a 3 hour journey back with Clover so set off at 4am and back home by 10am. She cried for 10 minutes, then slept for 2 1/2 hours then just sat up and watched until we got home. Have the radio on low volume as well and crack the window a little bit. I brought a travel crate as well and now use it for storage, lined it with old towels as mentioned above.

Don't worry about the crying, the pup might not have much (if any) experience of travelling in a car. Should have had the one trip to vets for check and first vaccination but they'll have been with their littermates then so was probably more carnage than anything else.

    Good woof/luck

Thats awesome, good luck! If possible have a "Lick mat" with peanut butter (Natural - no sugar, low sodium and no artificial sweeteners!). That really set the stage for us and now my pup loves getting in the car and going out.

Thanks for your advice. The journey was a dream! She is settled and I cannot quite believe that having prepared a cardboard box by my bed, she put herself to bed in her crate, woke once for the loo after nearly 7hrs and then went back to sleep! So far she is an absolute little legend.
