Nope - I was being pernickety Angela - you had lost the first bracket off the quote box so it didn't quite show up as you had intended. 8)

    Mmmmmm backwards step today!
Weave Poles : seems to be going ok on the one set of poles, going to keep doing that as per the manual....so sloooowly!
Jumps: I've kept to one jump but upped the jump height today gradually ,when we got to a certain height ( but still lower than the bars he does in the park ???)he started running under it ;D ??? :(
So I reduced the height right back down and got a few good jumps in and stopped.
Send away : getting in the hoop quickly and properly but falls apart if I increase the distance so looks like this will be slow progress too ,but will stick with it and do a video over the weekend x

    Thanks for the update! :)

With the jumping - you will get the message across that he has to go over it. He'll work out that he gets nothing for going under. Can you drape a cloth over the bar so it looks more solid?

Building up distance can be hard with the send away. It might be a good time to add a target that he knows he has to sit beside. Or else just build up really slowly. We got stuck at that too and found that adding a target helped us move ahead :)

Looking great, Angela! Sounds like good progress, even with a few bobbles here and there. No worries, bobbling along with you... :)

Re: The Summer is upon us!

We got 2 jumps consistently in the house so moved out into the garden early eve, just to check how he was doing on his verbal cue.i lowered the height though ,no refusals so pleased with that ;D great tip to make the jump appear more solid when I increase the height,Rachael thanks.
I'll use the disc to help me out with the send away....our 'Target' cue is touch your nose to my fist though ::) so need to use another verbal cue. I'm puzzling a bit on how you would remove the disc from the process Racahel ?It doesn't matter for us doing it for fun but Im sure you wouldn't use that in an Obedience Test ?So what is the step to get Obi into the correct position and what do you give him.I know,I know! ;D I'm miles off needing to worry about this! ;D x

You can shape sitting next to the target in exactly the way that you did it with sitting in the hoop :) Then add the target to the hoop. When he's reliably going into the hoop with a bit more distance than he was before then remove the target and give him the cue - big reward if he gets it right.

I'm not sure if that answers your question about it but please keep asking! :)

Isn't it the same process as dummy markers and blind retrieves? I mean if you want to send the dog away from you in a straight line without either a hoop or a target. The dog should run out expecting to find the target (dummy marker), so you work up to him not seeing it at first until he has run a little way, then it not being there at all, but you can send him out then use stop whistle or directional control at a distance (presuming you don't want him running forever ::) ).

It's not quite the same. When a dummy is involved it's acting as a lure (a pull factor that the dog wants). In the send away there is no lure. Plus the sit is always done with reference to a visible object (even if you remove your target you never remove the hoop/square). In the send away you do not want to cue your dog to sit in the square or hoop or at the target. The sit has to be automatic, no cue.

Yes, in obedience, sorry. I have in my mind that the send away, or send out, would be a skill to teach on its own - it must have lots of applications for working dogs (where there wouldn't be a hoop, target or dummy).

Oh yes, definitely :) That would be an extremely useful exercise on its own ("go away in that direction and keep going till I say so"). Not taught the same way, but no doubt a whole lot more useful in real life :)

They seem similar to me in the early stages too...the dummy being very like the marker we just ask for a different behaviour when you get to the dummy ie a retrieve whereas in the send away you ask for a sit. Just like the sit in a send away you want the pick and return to be automatic.

Its only later you need the dog to take a line away from you, trusting there's something out there to find :)

Exactly, I watched a vid on line of someone teaching it with a treat on a marker, and a diminishing marker (and treat delivered after the event) until the dog would run out on command without seeing the marker.

    I don't know if that's a good way.

Bit wary of teaching it though, I think I'll stick to following the retrieving path, don't want to get all muddled (high probability! ).

Yes, some people do teach it by putting a treat on a marker. I don't do it that way as I want the dog to go out and sit right away and look at me. Using a treat on a marker can encourage a whole lot of sniffing around... But it's one method :)

Barbara, yes, you are right, the exercises are really more similar in the earlier stages than I had thought at first :)

Ah I keep losing my posts!annoyed.com!
Been a bit busy socially this weekend so not much time to practice but we've picked it up today
    Jumping:
Here we go over 3 jumps,we've got this with no refusals in 3 different locations on the house and garden now so I just need to up the height and add a couple more in,I think I've got it on cue though...what do you think?I need to watch my hand signal stays consistent and what is it with the little skip I seem to find it necessary to do when I say Jump? oh and I clicked randomly when I was treating him at the end...do you think he noticed ? :-[

    Ok,Send Away...
Following Rachael's suggestion I decided to use a marker to see if that would help me get some distance between Dexter and his hoop and me....
This threw up a couple of issues...I've decided on the Verbal cue of 'Mark' although I've not introduced it yet,I have already used Target ......twice :-[ long story.so anyway ,fresh start using a different coloured disc and what will be a new cue.....
This was our second session today,I want him to sit behind the marker

    https://www.flickr.com/photos/97066992@N03/14187186250/

He was a bit too focused on the treats at first so I had to chuck a bit of chicken to get him moving ::)
The first sit was ok,I think, the second one my click was inaccurate,he was over to the side a bit....the video was too long for flickr so I had to split it into 2 .The end of this part leaves you in suspense as to whether he gets into the correct position on his next try! :p ........this is my film directorial way of building the tension! ;D

    https://www.flickr.com/photos/97066992@N03/14186924557/

He's funny scooting back on his bum .....

We'll get one more practice in tonight too and keep working on it.......then Ill need advice about how I put this new skill...sitting next to a marker on a 'Mark' cue together with sitting in the hoop which I've already started using a verbal 'spot' cue.....poor doggie,I'm confused so he's bound to be ;D
