I joined a few weeks ago because our new pup Sam has me close to tears. Things are much better now and we are settling into our new lives together. Here are some pics of the handsome devil.
I have to say Sam isn’t as affectionate as I was hoping he’d be. He likes cozy a little when he’s tired but that it. He likes to rough house and do puppy play but not a lot of cozy cuddle stuff. Is this a male thing?
Not really, some males and some females are 'busier' characters than others. . He is a very beautiful boy. Great photos!
Thanks for the response, Pippa. One issue I’m having is that Sam is getting up 2-3 times at night to use the bathroom. He’s slept through the nights about 7 times so far so I know he can do it. I feed him around 6 pm. I took him out and he went pee and poop at 7:50 pm right before 8:00 bed. Then he got up and went out at 11, 1:30, and 3:30. I don’t get it. He’s 14 weeks as of Feb 10. Any advice?
Presumably he is waking you by crying, does he go for a pee when you take him outside? It's important to keep everything very low key and brief. No chatting or stroking just, straight out and back in again. Otherwise he may be tempted to wake you just for some company. Sometimes a UTI can cause frequency but it's not that common in male dogs. Might be worth checking with the vet though. If the problem persists, and the vet says he is healthy, then I'd be tempted to set up a playpen with some puppy pads in, well away from his bed. Then he can pee on the pad if he wakes. It's just a way of making sure he gets no attention at all for night waking. It's not something I'd normally recommend though so if he does sleep through sometimes, it might be worth hanging on for a bit longer. If you do use a pad, put it down last thing before you go to bed, and get up early to remove it. You should find he doesn't use it after the first few nights, and instead, waits for you to get up.
