as you all know i am a first time dog owner,...i think the training of your own dog comes from within :)
i have had many tears training jasper, i am reaping my rewards with jasper, they do say you reap what you sew,.....i have a very well behaved boy, very well trained boy,.....pat on the back to me, as i have done it all alone with the help of this site :) :) :)
i do understand that those of you who have rescue dogs is very different, you have all had to face a difficult time, i would not of been able to have a rescue dog, with all the fears i faced with dogs,.... i admire all of you with rescue dogs, i think you are all super stars, especially helen who as put her all into training charlie xxxx

no one knows our own dog better than we do :)
i want to shout from the roof tops, that i got there, ;D ;D ;D

... not convinced she knows more than I do (which is not a lot at all)...[/quote]

I suspect that you are doing yourself down here Julie and that you are probably very knowledgeable ;)

Anyway, back in the days when I used to play online poker (Yes, really. No, it isn't addictive. Yes, I did make money at it. ;) ) I was a member of a poker forum. We formed a group that would exchange details of hands played and critique the way in which our reviewee had performed. It was amazing just how productive these reviews could be - actually being responsible for carrying out a review made you think very carefully about the way that you played and how close this was to theoretical optimal play. This is all a long-winded way of saying, are there like-minded people in your area that you could train with and critique each others styles of training and each of you make use of the other person and their dog for training purposes?

i am fortunate jac that i have been able to give him, 100 % of my time and patients, :)
it as been the hardest thing i have ever done in my life...i am not into all that puppy love :)
i have been working so hard on the pulling on the lead, i meet a guy who as 2 beautiful well behaved 6 year old golden retrievers boys, he as spent a lot of time over the last few weeks teaching me how to stop the pulling,... he takes jasper in hand, why i hold on to his 2 boys....i asked him would he swap for a week, ...then i thought i would sooner him pull me than leave him for a week ;D
his dogs was the first dog i had ever touched/stroked ...i will get a photo of them, :)

Some really useful thoughts there, uncle bob, thank you.

I struggle to find suitable classes, for a couple of reasons.

I need outside classes. I've done the too-many-dogs-in-the-church-hall thing and it didn't go well. But there are severe restrictions on outside classes in London.

There are just no dog training clubs in my area - the nearest one with a good reputation would involve a drive across London (could take hours). I just can't fit that in alongside the already complex split working hours we do to care for Charlie plus his vet appointments, physio and hydro.

Right now, I think the best I can do is more vids and beg people on the forum for feedback. And make use of my wonderful dog walker who can provide other dogs and, although not a trainer, is willing to spend time discussing how we can work better with Charlie. And she is sensible, experienced, and I have a great relationship with her (so she'll tell me what she thinks I could do better).

Well, anyway, it will soon be the summer - then I'll be back in Cornwall and can get to gundog lessons. :)

Sounds like a good training partner to me ;D just because she doesn't bill herself as a trainer doesn't mean she's not the right person to help you.....

Roll on summer!!! Hoping you've time for swimming before you head west 8)

Glad you've found someone you have confidence in Julie. It is so important to be on the same wavelength so you can respect the opinions of the person. I always listen to opinions. Sometimes you get something from them and sometimes it crystallises what you DON'T want.

Trouble is that with all, what can be loosely described as Adult Education, you wouldn't be considering it if you weren't interested and if you are interested you will have done research and it is difficult to know what level classes you need.

Hope she works out for you.

    Hi Julie

I've just stumbled on a web site www.doglistener.co.uk

His name is Stan Rawlinson and he is in Hampton Greater London.

You might have seen this and dismissed it as not useful but his training methods and behaviour training sound interesting. I haven't read it thoroughly yet so it might be no good. You might spot something I've missed.

Unfortunately he's not in the right area for me obviously but I thought of you and Charlie.

Like I said it might not be what you are looking for but thought I'd mention it just incase. :)

    Hi Lynne,

I have read quite a lot about jinglers and it's not all good, as I understand it's a 'negative' training method, although I could be wrong and that wouldn't be the first time ::). The lead/collar/jingler is quite expensive and you could train the same behaviour with a £2.00 clicker and some tasty treats. I wonder what everyone else thinks about them ??? xx

Thanks, Jen, that's really kind of you to think of me.

I'm not convinced by the jingler - if it's just a no reward marker, I can say "no, no" for free. If the sound is an aversive, then I guess how negative that is will depend on the dog. I can't see it making any impact on Charlie whatsoever. Probably just over excite him with a new noise around.

Let us know how you get on with the jingler Lynne. I've not come across them before. :)

I'm not trying to extinguish any bonfires here but I reckon that pulling is cured by a lot of damned hard work, even more so pulling when distractions are ahead. Anything that seems to provide an instant fix like this video suggests would be consigned to the snake oil bin for me.

I wonder whether it is simply the correction of turning 180 degrees that isn't the important aspect.

what upset me on that video was watching him correct a dog that didn't seem to be behaving that unacceptably in the first place. he was hardly a mega puller who's just seen his mate Fido in the next field.

here, pulling isn't a problem if the dogs are on their own and without the lure of other dogs they usually play with. put those two things together and we look like we own a sled dog team. :(
