Re: This isn't Lab health, but spaniel health So pleased that Theakston seems to be improving - hope it continues and he is allowed home. Alice
Re: This isn't Lab health, but spaniel health Lovely positive news Clare , thinking of you and keeping everything crossed
Re: This isn't Lab health, but spaniel health Have just collected Theakston from the vets. They are keen to stress that it is still early stages, but say that he is much better this morning than they thought he would be. He is eating, drinking, and able to stand long enough to go to the toilet. We had plenty of tail wagging when he saw me. Having managed to keep up his vocal protest ALL night, he has just fallen asleep in his crate next to me. Shot out this morning and bought a new crate and bed for him, as the crate I had with me was Brew's large one and he can't have too much excess room for manoeuvre. His medium size crate is of course in our garage back home in Scotland... Brew has now taken up the whining on his behalf, as she wants to get in there with him. He is on painkillers, anti-inflammatories and complete crate rest. He is due back to see the vet in a week, sooner of course if there are any problems. Thank you so much for all the healing vibes - Theakston would express his own gratitude, but 24 hours of non-stop howling really takes it out of a spaniel. xxx
Re: This isn't Lab health, but spaniel health Wonderful news that he's continuing to improve Please do pass on our very best pats to him.
Re: This isn't Lab health, but spaniel health It's great he's back home with you. Being able to sleep will do him good aswell. Keep improving Theakston. x x
Re: This isn't Lab health, but spaniel health Great to hear this! I hope you both get some rest today!
Re: This isn't Lab health, but spaniel health Hope he makes a full recovery soon, sounds positive. My Pointer had major ventral slot spinal surgery on a herniated disc (between C2 & C3) last year, he was lucky not to have been totally paralyzed. It was a long painful 8 week recovery and meant totally separating the dogs for the entire time but in his case it's been completely successful and he's now back to his normal energetic, happy self, running, bouncing and chasing birds. He was however just 7yrs old and insured so we felt he had to be given a chance, if he'd been 10 we might well have made a different decision and certainly won't be putting him through it again!
Re: This isn't Lab health, but spaniel health Oh Clare I am sorry I am just catching up after a week of no forum and was sorry to read about Theakston, but happy to read he is a little better. How is he now? I hope you are OK with all that is going on at the moment. Please take care of yourself xxx
Re: This isn't Lab health, but spaniel health After a week of complete crate rest, anti-inflammatories and painkillers, Theakston is standing just fine and is able to walk quite happily. His back left leg remains weaker than the right, but he did stand on this back left when he cocked his leg yesterday. Reviewed by the vet this morning, who is very pleased with how well he is doing. He is not allowed to do any more just yet though for fear of over-doing it and setting things back, so the crate rest continues, and he is still to be carried outside, and allowed a few steps only then. Theaks has always been a dog who loves company, and the crate rest has proved a little challenging, as he would normally just follow me around the house. Now, the second that I move out of his line of vision, he starts howling... full warbling chorus and all. Sometimes, if someone else remains in the room with him, he consents to keep it down to a low grade whine! However, it's really me he's after, and he settles best when I am next to him. Taking Brew out to play in the garden creates all sorts of comedy moments as he gets carried out, then crate carried out, then Brew allowed out - at times it's a bit like the puzzle with getting the goose, corn and fox across to an island in a row boat, because I can't risk her bouncing him at any time! Could do with crates in multiple locations just to transfer him from one to another... Vet didn't want to take him off any of the tablets yet, so he has a further two weeks worth, when hopefully the dosage of those can be significantly lowered and he will be allowed more freedom to move himself around the house and garden. Hydrotherapy remains an option for the future. He feels so much better he would like to be allowed to move so much more now, but he needs to wait a bit. He did come out to the beach with us yesterday - fashioned a sling for him and carried him all the way. He rather liked relaxing in the sunshine with his nose in the air, looking down on all the other passing dogs. My daughters speculated on him re-adjusting to normality in a few weeks time! He attracted a lot of attention, and we heard plenty of people muttering as they passed as to why on earth that mad woman was carrying a dog in what seemed to be a home-made equivalent of a baby sling... Of course, most of the dog owners just stopped and asked! All in all though, considering the state he was in last weekend, things are looking good Clare
Re: This isn't Lab health, but spaniel health Absolutely - things sound great. You are managing with your boy and he still has enthusiasm for the good things in life
Re: This isn't Lab health, but spaniel health Good news Love the improvisation what we do for our dogs eh!!
Re: This isn't Lab health, but spaniel health That's brilliant Clare. Im so pleased Theakston is doing so well. I've been wondering how you'd all been getting on and waiting for an update. At least the weather is supposed to be good this week so hopefully you can all go out in the sunshine again which will do him good. Not sure how good it will be for your back though. Jen
Re: This isn't Lab health, but spaniel health That all sounds wonderfully positive, keep going Theakston x
