Penny has discovered a new hobby.... Bin raiding!!!

It all started a couple of months ago when I came home from work and found a couple of empty cat food sachets on the kitchen floor, carefully shredded and licked clean. I just put it down to the fact that the bin was stuff really full so she would have had no problems in getting them out. I made sure to empty the bin regular, and turn it sideways against the counter so she couldn't get her nose in to flip the lid up.

Last week came home to another cat food sachet pilfered from the bin and torn into tiny peices. Again my fault as the bin was very full.

Today I come home and can't see her when I walk in the front door... (The kitchen doorway is opposite the front door and she's always waiting by the gate). I call her in case she's still in her bed... Nothing. Getting worried now. I go through the gate and immediately to the right is a little alcove under the stairs where our back door is. She is sitting facing the corner with a large crisp packet stuck quite firmly over her head!!!

I have no idea how long she was sat there for, and I don't really want to think about it as it upsets me a bit! It took a good tug to get it off so no idea how she got it that firmly stuck on her. I had to wash her face after as she was so stressed she had dribbled loads :(

Going to buy a new bin that she can't get into now!

Oh no :-\ hope you are both ok now after your fright? Could you put the bin outside the kitchen when you go out to work? Might be easier than buying a new bin !

Oh poor girl! I hope she's ok now and good news you found her quickly. Glad it wasn't a softer bag and she could still breathe ok!

Agree emptying/moving the bin each morning sounds like a good plan.

I know, I feel horrible just thinking about what might have happened!!

I will move the bin for now but it's not a feasible long term solution so we will buy a new one at the weekend probably.

Oh dear ... dog-proof bins seem to be the expensive ones ...

Many years ago we used to have a swing-lid plastic bin, but the cat soon learnt the knack of getting into it and sharing the contents with the dog, then the dog (a Tibetan terrier) found he could tip it over. I suppose the bonus is that the expensive metal pedal bin is still going strong many years (and dogs!) later. ;D

Oh dear!! What a bad experience for you both. Glad she is ok.

We have a kitchen bin that's a plastic bag holder that fixes to the inside of a low cupboard door. You hang the bag on it and then when it's full take it off and chuck it in the bin. So the bin is behind a door and you don't have an actual bin... Or could you put the actual bin in the cupboard under the sink?
