    Re: Tired.com

Hi everyone thank you for your suggestions. I'm v tempted to put some paper down for Bob and leave the crate door open - night and day. Will speak with my boyfriend tonight when he's home. We've only got limited space though so he couldn't have his own room at all or anything like that.

Do I paper down in the crate room and then move it slowly away nearer to the garden? Is that the idea? Would I still take him out if I see him going or do I leave him to it during the day? Not looked into this at all!

You can only use it as an "emergency" thing really - you need to double up your efforts to get him to go outside when you are around (otherwise he'll never get the toilet training thing) and always super treats for going outside, it's not a replacement for the normal toilet training routine in anyway. It's just a way to allow a sleep deprived human to return to normality.

So you carry on as normal, but just don't sweat it if your pup has a wee and poo on newspaper (as far away from his crate as possible) while you get some extra shut eye. He must be on a hard floor, and don't bank on him going on the newspaper! That's a bonus. So you must have somewhere suitable.

This was Charlie's arrangement - although I soon used the whole room he was in, with the puppy pen forming a gate to the room:

Aw Julie your boy is so gorgeous! :) Thank you for your advice.

So I'm thinking we get some puppy pads over the weekend and put them down on the other side of the room during the day but still encourage him to go outside wherever possible. I'll also put a pad just outside the back door and start taking him there as well instead of to the bottom of the garden Then will move the pad inside slowly towards the back door as well to make the association with going outside. Currently we carry Bob right to the end of the garden and down a flight of steps so he'd never be able to make his own way there. But he could make his own way to the back door to go if he needed to - which I think is important actually in making the association.

Tempted to crate him still at night as he's been consistent from 11pm to 3am this whole week. Then try crating again until 6am. If I need sleep after this and can't stay downstairs.. I can just leave him in the room with the pad. That will make a lot of difference to me actually.

Sorry for the essay just wanting to put down my plan of attack in writing! I can then show my boyfriend when he's home later!

If you are around in the day, take him outside as normal and don't have puppy pads down.

If though, you absolutely need to get a couple of hours shut eye, yes, put the puppy pads down on the other side of the room, and leave his crate door open.

I don't see why you would put puppy pads at the back door or stop taking him down the garden though - you absolutely must take him outside and reward whenever you can. Certainly don't take him to wee and poo inside - if you are there, take him outside.

Sorry, beginning to worry that I've seriously confused you with this! It's an emergency thing - if you need to sleep - you can't start taking your pup to paper inside instead of taking him outside. :-\

It does get better :) all dogs become house trained at different ages. I was lucky that by 14 weeks, Harley was rarely having accidents inside (unless she had a poorly tummy). Their sleeping patterns do change along with being housetrained and you will soon forget about the hard work in the first few months :)

Yup hopefully we are on the up now... I'm feeling much happier. We don't have the puppy pads yet but my boyfriend is home tonight so am gonna blag a decent night. I know that makes all the difference. Bob having a poorly tummy & bad sloppy poo isn't going to be helping him adjust to things either really.

I took him to a cafe today - just down the road for a bit of socialisation and he did a really runny poo on the carpet under one of the tables       Fortunately they like dogs in there and they rushed off to get me a cloth and some disinfectant and I was able to clear it all up without any of the other diners noticing. HOW embarrassing LOL! Annoying as I'd just taken him outside to see if he needed to go as well. Oh well, he'll get the hang of it soon I'm sure!

There is your problem - dogs can't hold sloppy poos.

Have you tried pro-fibre? It firms up the poos nicely :)

Please dont be downhearted, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Bob will soon be sleeping through the night. Of course the downside to that is he will have more energy during the day.

    Well done for your patience.

Just a note of caution I am not sure how old your pup is ? I think he is still quiet young and therefore not fully inoculated yet ? You probably should be carrying him at this stage and not exposing him to places where dogs who may have not been jabbed could have been. :)

Edp - Bob is 9 weeks. I am carrying him everywhere (I put him in a satchel today to free my hands up - we got some very funny looks!) If I think he needs potty then I'll put him down somewhere safe. I'm being as careful as I possibly can but would rather get out there as much as poss :) The cafe for example was very clean (until we arrived lol!) The other place we've been is a book shop whose owner has a whippet puppy.. we sort of had a puppy play date yesterday which was quite cute. And it was very safe and clean.

Anywhere where other dogs go at this stage can't be classed as safe . You said it was a dog friendly cafe so that would worry me. I totally agree getting out and about Meg went all over the place at this stage. :)

I think the biggest risk is the risk of poor socialisation.... I would be doing exactly what you are doing, Loopylou.

Glad the cafe owners were understanding about the poo :) I bet he's so cute he could get away with anything! :)

I used a baby sling for Gypsy as she got heavy fast!

That seems an age ago now, hard to believe it's only ten weeks ago!
