Amy has no recall when it comes to seeing dogs. However she did enjoy the romp around the field with the 2 year old lab. (who had no recall either he he.) The first time she didn't come back my first son had shouted her from the park, just as a dog walked past. So i didnt have time to sit her down and distract her. Unfortunate timing in my sons part!
Re: today i discovered I'm struggling with this too.....And I need to get on it and proof it properly,Ive got Total Recall downloaded so I've got no excuse to not be working with commitment to achieve it...going to focus these next couple of weeks, ill let you know, how we get on ,you will get there too.on our walks in the park Dexter isn't supposed to be off the lead .....(he is though of course ???)so I'm not being responsible if I don't train him to be reliable....Im very vigilant and always call him back successfully when I see another dog before he does....and he'll come easily then...we haven't had any 'situations',but I'm not relaxed and its not how it should be......
Re: today i discovered I think that , for owners of sociable pups , recall away from other dogs is one of the hardest to teach, but it can be done . What you have to do is to make yourself far more interesting than the other dog and the best way is to use really high value treats . So , you set off , and as you get close to the off lead area , you let your pup see that you have something ultra tasty in your pocket , show it to them, but it has to be something worth returning for , I used sausage chopped into tiny bits , something really smelling appealing Keep practising the recall and offering the treat as reward , if this still becomes a problem around other dogs , it may just be necessary to resort to a long training line until the recall is solid , good luck
Re: today i discovered Thanks Kate, great common sense advice...I'm not a million miles away and Dexter is totally motivated by food and anything other than kibble is a major event in his life ;D !!it's my fault we aren't there yet,my Husband is so much more relaxed and confident that he will come back and you know what he pretty much does.I get a bit panicky and my voice changes if I'm watching a dog approach ( all wrong I know :-[)in anticipation that I can't get him back,it's my concern that just that one person that he belts over to will be the person to complain .Id not wanted to lose ground with our holiday but he's been so good since Ive been back that I should have just kept up the momentum.....anyway I know what Ive got to do so its for me to get on with it and just do it! ;D
Re: today i discovered Sounds like you are doing great Angela and you`re right, they sense if we are anxious or worried so trying to keep relaxed is the best way . OK , so this isnt always easy when your pup is golloping over a field to get to another dog but probably your husbands more chilled attitude is the best one to adopt , they do react to a change in voice too, little monkeys, too blinkin clever for their own good at times :
Re: today i discovered I've mentioned elsewhere that my technique to call Pops (as a puppy) back from a game with another dog was to wait until she was close to me and/or looking at me, then two short blasts on the whistle (pip pip) or a firm 'Poppy COME!', then wheel about and march away. It takes a bit of nerve to turn your back on your pup and walk away, but it worked well for us.
Re: today i discovered I've ordered a whistle... but even without it, the walking away tip is a really good one, and seems to help a lot. My "come along with me" command is "let's go" and today, as soon Charlie was reasonably close by me in his play, I caught his eye and said "let's go" and walked away. Perfect. He broke off his game and trotted after me! I need to work on getting Charlie to stay with me. Today there were some people with dogs a little way ahead of me on the path coming towards us - Charlie ran toward them, came back on "come" gobbled his bit of sardine and ran toward them again (I could have caught his collar but the people were smiling and encouraging, and slowed down their walk, obviously very tolerant of a puppy learning). He did this 4 times, then the dogs came to us so he got to play. So we've got another 4 recalls away from dogs under our belt but I've got to sort out the stay big time now!
Re: today i discovered Sounds like there is progress being made, and determination on the part of the owners, so I'm sure you guys will crack it! I have Pippa's book and am going to start working on this after I'm back from holidays. Simba is a very sociable dog and so I know he will likely have trouble with this as well, so I'll be following your progress with interest!
Re: today i discovered I have the book but not got to the training part yet. I treated Amy when she did come back then as the guy said it was ok I let her play again.
Re: today i discovered oh ....i can recall jasper whatever he may be doing but not got to the recall from another dog yet , thanks to pippas book......i am going to get a training lead tomorrow, training every day
