Re: Today's Article: The Secret to Success! I think that, yes, turning up is the thing - nothing else will train your dog. Not making plans, not reading books, not fishing round on the internet for ideas. I do think though, that making sure you turn up and are effective is also critical. If you carry on doing the same thing, day in and day out, without looking for the moment when your dog is fluent and consistent - so it's time to move on - means you can waste time and just build in errors. You might probably guess that I think my last training period was too much of the same old, same old, and I wasn't disciplined enough about forward progress.
Re: Today's Article: The Secret to Success! I liked this article and totally agree. 'Turning up' for training requires, I find, quite a lot of mental / emotional energy - after a session I can feel as tired as when I used to teach a class of young children!
Re: Today's Article: The Secret to Success! A subject close to my own heart just now, have been feeling like I've really taken the foot off the gas on training over the past few months, work has been hideously busy but actually that shouldn't matter, there is still plenty of time but I've been using that spare time to make my dog training plans, but then not deliver them...so this has been a great reminder to just get on with it! We do still do training on walks, but its just been a bit ad hoc and random, and stuff I know they can mostly do already and have fun doing, so time to get a grip.....
Re: Today's Article: The Secret to Success! Yes, I agree, just do it little and often - and give your dog your full attention when you do.
Re: Today's Article: The Secret to Success! Ouch. Hitting close to home and totally true. Ten minutes a day, six to seven days a week. Right. Thanks for the reminder, Pippa, I have definitely been slacking off.
