Molly is almost 5 months, better late than never, I have decided to introduce a specific toilet area. My question is how long would you say it will take to train this? At the moment she's free to wander in and out of the garden but for training this I will have to restrict this and take her out on a lead to wee. Big change to our routine for a while I'm guessing but will be worth it. Any tips appreciated, thanks.

My only tip is Everybody in the house has to take her there Every time she goes out. Which is why it failed to take at my house.

It's' a long job - and much easier with a fence ours is an Ellie Bo and has lasted 3 years and still going strong.

This is ours - we have it by the back door when the pups are tiny and in the other corner when they are trained. We swill every wee with a weak mix of Simple Solution, no smell at all.

I much prefer it - it saves the lawn.

Sadly, I have never been able to train Tatze to use it. I let her use the lawn when she was little and she can hold it all day (and longer!) if I try to get her to use the spending pen.

We teach them to wee and poo on command, 'busy busy' for wees and 'big busy' for poos. For the first 6 weeks we say the command WHILE they are weeing, then the next 6 weeks JUST before the wee. By then they will do it on command so long as they are 'full'. By 12 months old they will squeeze a bit out any time.

This is essential for Guide Dogs as their owners need to be confident they won't spend at any time on walks and that they can be sure they are 'empty' before work, meetings etc.

It's a big part of the pups' training, but takes a lot of hard work - I don't know if it would be worth it for a pet.
