Is it too late to clicker train a toilet area for Charlie? Hattie hasn't done a poo in our yard or garden since Charlie arrived so not a problem but having a large ish garden it's a pain having to hunt the poo in various locations every day ::) Sorry to discuss this on a Friday night :-[ ;) xx

Could you make a contained area in the garden? If you could it might make it a bit easier x

I can close the gate from our yard to the garden, would that do? Is Charlie too old to train though? :-\ x

    I don't think he's too old to train :)
depending on where you want him to do his business? If it's in the yard, then yes I would close the gate and reward highly every time he goes where you wasn't him to :)

Not too old at all :)

It's soooo useful having a small space to swill down. I let Gypsy into the main garden after she's done her business, it has become a simple routine :)

I hope it's ok to add a question to this thread - does it matter if the dog's toilet area is on a patio? Our breeder suggested it should be on grass so the dog gets used to going on that surface instead of on pavements, but the area we had planned to section off for the dog and use as a toilet area is patio!

We don't have any grass, just a terrace, so the pups got used to going on there first. They don't have any problem going on grass, snow or anything else outside, though, so I wouldn't worry!

Guide Dogs spending areas are patio - and that's 1000s of dogs, and they are just fine! It would not be possible or safe for blind people to be searching gardens for poos , so their spending areas are paved (sometimes gravel) and quite small.

Gypsy is so used to it that she never wees when on a lead or even a free run ( we went for 45 minutes this morning, not one wee - she went to her spending area when she got home) I swill each wee, I squirt a couple of squidges of Simple Solution in a tub of water and swill the wee away. That way we get no smell and hosing down doesn't become a chore :)
