My lab jack is 18 months old. He was always allowed to wee and pooh in the garden but when we had our walls rebuilt and the garden was out of action, I had to take him out for his 'business' each time to the woods nearby. Now I have my garden back I fenced off the garden but he has a 8 x 6 foot area of grass which I hoped he would use for toilet area. However, he won't go and just holds it in, so I have to end up taking him out!. I've tried saying wee wee and leading him to the grass area but nothing happens. Any suggestions? Another reason I fenced it off is because he dug up all my plants and now I want to redo the garden and planting.
Re: Toilet problem Hi and welcome , have you tried saying the trigger word , wee wee, when he does it out of the garden ? If you keep on saying the trigger word when you are out with him and he performs , he should eventually realise and hopefully start using his patch again
Re: Toilet problem You know the things which you get from the vets to take a wee sample? Try catching and bottling some wee and tipping it where you want him to wee. The smell often encourages them
Re: Toilet problem Hi and welcome . When Harley was younger she wouldn't go outside of our garden. I started using the trigger word when she went at home then started saying it out on a walk. When she went outside of our house I rewarded her with high level treats
Re: Toilet problem Riley will pee in the garden but not poo unless he's really desperate. If he goes out twice a day and does his business then is that a problem? I can see it would be handy to have him pee at home last thing so would definitely try some of the tricks suggested but you may not fix the pooing.
Re: Toilet problem Thank you for your ideas. I have tried the trigger word but will persist especially with high value treats, and will def try the collection of wee. Hopefully in time he will succumb. I don't mind taking him out but it's a hassle first thing and last thing, especially if one day I'm poorly!
Re: Toilet problem Charlie will pee in the garden (but only because this is both firmly on cue and heavily rewarded, he doesn't ever pee in the garden without a cue) but will only poo in an emergency. This is going to be a "thing" soon, because he is going to have an op and will have to poo in the garden. The thing is, they might be a bit uncomfortable trying to hold on, but they will poo and pee in the garden eventually - so you can just wait him out if you want to do so. That's what going to happen with Charlie - I'll just keep giving him the opportunity to go, and eventually he will. And get lots of treats.
Re: Toilet problem My problem with Juno has been the reverse recently. Following her surgery she has only been allowed in the garden on her lead so when w were finally allowed to walk up and down the road she showed no interest in a wee or a poo outside her garden despite having a wee and a poo wherever previously. She would wait until we were back in the garden and then relieve herself. Some 2 weeks later she has just started going on walks.
