It's 38 degrees outside,Dexter and I have just spent 10 minutes in the garden.....nothing....as a control I took him to the tree outside the gate ....massive wee! Jacqui wait until the you read the other thread about MY poo story! All in all we haven't had a very successful toileting week,but hope I've given you a few laughs...at least you all humour me kindly! No other dogs visible to invite in so I'll have to wait until it's cooler this eve,my sister is staying tonight with her husband and kids....she is going to be horrified by this turn of events!if we haven't cracked it by the weekend,I'm going to give up and use my ikea rubber mats as stepping stones to the tree! Come back to modify to say ,secretly I know you all want me to get him in a dog cart don't you?! ;D
Re: Toilet training Dexter! I cannot understand why they won't wee in the garden! I am pleased in a way as the plants don't get marked; I did have one previous male dog who did wee in the garden. You would think that they would mark their own property? Does anyone know why they won't?

Yes I'm interested too ;D...Rachael raised a point earlier about it possibly being they see the garden as an extension of the house...ie they are trained not to wee in the house and the garden is an extension of the 'house'.In my case I really think the rewards he got being taken out into the park were too exciting and he hangs on in the hope we will take him over there.....he's a bright boy though,you'd think as he gazes out our gate to the park and sees NO other dogs /living thing and feels the heat on his body he would decide it's a good idea to go in the shade of one of our trees!im standing there with a treat bag and his squeaky ball like a lemon,if only he'd go,he'd get the best rewards ever!

Re: Toilet training Dexter!Update with Warning of graphic photo Hi all, Just catching up on a lot of your news and activites and reading Lauren's post about Penny feeling the heat in the car reminded me of this thread I started...... The update of the training is .......we failed :-[ I couldn't bear him holding on for so long.....but we have a routine that works and that will prevent any of the awful injuries I feared when I started trying to teach him to go in the garden.... Let me show you a really chronic case of burnt paws that circulates on Facebook and is the picture my vet had up in their surgery before I even owned Dexter ( warning ,I'm not posting it directly in as it's upsetting to see ,Jacqui has set up a separate link in a following post ) This is something else that came to me this week too.... image by dexterpops02, on Flickr Ok so we had to come up with a way to negotiate this distance and keep Dexter safe ( as he is too stubborn to know what is good for him :) image by dexterpops02, on Flickr This is taken from my front door.....you can see the Park across the road and the second tree to the left is the one that is acceptable to HRH Dexter ;D Basically we manage by time tabling his toileting around the times of the areas of shade.... He gets taken out at 10.30 am when the sun is on the back off the house and this whole stretch is in shade ( but still unbearably hot ,42 degrees the other day) We also try him again at 2.30 when I can go through the garage which is the wall that runs down the left of our path,this halves the distance and gives me shade to stand in if a car is coming but we have a 4 second dash across the road that is in full sun ( I couldn't do this when I was in the ankle brace so I had to carry him : ;D good job he's only 24 kgs) I also give him a lift if we have any non timetabled requests to go out during the day.....he's very disgruntled that he has the indignity if being carried rather than the magnificent chariot he thought I would be compelled to buy ;D
Re: Toilet training Dexter! Yeah, no bejewelled chariot? I really can see why you hesitated to get a dog, but you're doing a magnificent job of managing the challenges.
Re: Toilet training Dexter! Random question and not on the topic of housetraining, but the whole burning the paws thing... Would he keep booties on? I assume it's probably something you've already tried in previous summers, but if not could it be worth a go? Then you wouldn't have to worry so much about how long it takes to get across the road?

Sorry Lauren,I didn't acknowledge your suggestion x They sell them here,I've never seen a dog wearing them : although you know that wouldn't stop me,we just do what we gotta do!i just feel that by the time I've got them on and off him,I could have carried him across the road if we aren't able to run it!it doesn't affect his proper walks at all....he get 5.15 - 7am this is when the heat is just starting to come in.he gets 20 mins ish at 6 pm play,before his dinner on the grass with a few of the neighbourhood dogs ,then another 45 mins to an hour at 9 pm when it's dark but quite humid...... There are only 4 dreadful months thankfully! X

Having seen that photo though I can understand why. :-\ We just take it for granted that we can nip them outside when necessary. I don't know how you cope with that heat. It's warm enough for me here at the moment. :
