I've come across a hitch (for us) in Total Recall. We are on exercise 2. Alternating super foods with ordinary meal. My problem is Molly never get gets a meal (yeh, yeh I know every Labrador on the planet spends huge amounts of time trying to convince their owner that they have never been fed). Molly gets all her food from toys, Kongs and hand fed in training. Never in a bowl. My solution is to exchange a handful of kibble for a bowl of food. I don't want to dilute the effect of the training I am trying to achieve, so I would welcome any comments/advice. Not a criticism of the book which is clear, well written and with touches of humour which makes it very readable.
Re: Total Recall Hitch Charlie didn't get his meal in a bowl at the time I was doing this, and I just used his kongs and I don't see why the exercise shouldn't work just as well with a kong full of food, or a buster cube etc - the exercise involves dividing the normal meal into portions anyway. I think the idea is just to associate the recall with the positive associations of meal time. I don't think it matters that Molly's positive associations will be with her kong or buster cube. Charlie dances round like a demented bat at the sight of his kong wobbler, it's much more exciting than his bowl anyway. A handful of kibble though, I don't think would do it. In that it wouldn't be different from giving her a treat. If Molly doesn't have the "whey-hey, it's dinner time" moment - or a variation on that with her buster cube - I don't think the exercise is meaningful for you, and it won't matter anyway. Just move on.
Re: Total Recall Hitch Gypsy has dried sprats for special treats. She came back from two loopy labradoodles this morning - hurrah!!
Re: Total Recall Hitch I want to turbo-charge my rewards for good recall. Inca came away from a friendly collie in the wood this morning - my fault I didn't see it in time to put her on the lead and I haven't proofed her at that level of recall. Obviously I was pretty chuffed with her. Anyway was thinking dried sprats sound good but was wondering where to get them from. Boogie where do you get yours?
Re: Total Recall Hitch Jackpot treats are a good idea...the idea behind exercise 2 though is to also harness the "wow it's dinner time" feeling. It's different from just feeding treats. I think anyway.

Re: Total Recall Hitch More problems. No matter where Molly is in the house the moment I pick up the whistle, whoosh and a dog appears at my feet. Do I reward for this? It is very difficult to do the 'blow the whistle and walk backwards while dog walks towards you' bit when dog is prancing around your feet. Seriously though, it is a structured programme, with warning not to try to progress to fast, how do I handle this?
Re: Total Recall Hitch Could you leave your whistle on so she stops responding to a whistle pick up. I pretty much wear mine round the house : : :
Re: Total Recall Hitch I decided that actually wearing it was they way to go. Trouble is that when I bought it I choose a bright orange whistle with a purple lanyard so I wouldn't lose it She is now seriously interested in the fridge (where I keep here chicken and sausage) and microwave (where I warm them up).
