Thank you Fiona! Appreciate that and it's a great site and video. I saved it and will use it, as well as share it. We've always had dogs and kids and for the most part are aware of all this .... BUT, as I've always said ... dogs are dogs and kids will be kids! My family has told me I 'hover' too much sometimes with the kids around the dogs .... but I always want to make sure the kids are doing right by the animal, etc. The older girls, my granddaughters, are pretty good and aware, the bigger challenge for me right now is my toddler grandson. Although he has his two dogs, a Weimarana and a Bassett, they were grown when he arrived and they've always been gentle on him. But, Maui is a puppy and Jackson is a baby .... so it takes a lot of one on one for sure! Appreciate your response!
Update on the dog next door. My husband, Maui and myself were outside. Our granddaughters were here earlier and Grampa puts up a big screen for them to watch movies while in the pool when it gets dark ... they love it. Anyway, there was a storm coming so we were taking it down. Our neighbor came out with Bentley, the dog to help. He left the dog outside of the gate, but both Maui and Bentley of course were very interested in each other on opposite sides of the fence! Anyway, I asked how he was doing and he told us Bentley had had another seizure last week. I asked what the Vet had said on follow up. Well, of course they never took him to follow up ... surprise! He said something to the effect that they don't do anything till they have 3 seizures? Is that correct? I have no clue. He is convinced that it's the heat (it's been very hot here) and that the dog has low blood sugar. He says that because they have a son with Type 1 Diabetes. I mentioned to him that my husband told me that he was behind in his shots and asked if maybe he had considered that due to that, he might have picked something up, because my Vet told me that Maui couldn't be down on the ground till after completion of all her shots in case there were other dogs around that weren't up to date. Then he said, 'well, yes, he needs one more round of shots'. Now that tells me that he never finished the shots after he got the dog a few years ago, let alone an annual! Yikes! Then he said maybe they would take him to at least get the rest of his shots ... he would talk to his wife. She pretty much calls the shots over there and I don't have faith that is going to happen. So, at least he knows at this point that Maui is not going out of the fenced in back yard .... and Bentley can't come in. I'm concerned about the poor dog tho ... but I guess people do this! Sad
Juno says she had lots and lots of fun, and that she retrieved her proper 1lb dummy lots of times from the lake (first time we've taken it with us), and made a new friend but he wanted to steal her toys and then her lead.....
Hi! Just wanted add to this ,honesty is indeed the best way to go.you can do this without becoming aggressive and therefore creating a situation. Both dogs are important of course your is more so.However the other dog needs care and concern as well. Hope everything can be happily resolved.
Thanx Peggy. That is true. I'm just keeping my Maui as safe as I can. However, I do feel badly for Bentley. Haven't seen or talked to them for a few days so I don't know how he's doing or if he's had another seizure or not. We see our vet a week from tomorrow on the 6th so I will ask about the '3 seizures before doing anything' comment mentioned in my above post. Not that I can do anything about it, I'm just curious. I'm sure they probably think I'm over protective, but who cares. In our last conversation I did say what I could. What they do with that is up to them. Meanwhile Maui is doing nicely and we are loving her very much!
Hey that's great. We are getting another black lab girl in September. We already have one black lab,Jack. This will be jacks niece so that's very citing. On Friday my hubby and myself are going to visit her,she is 3 weeks old and by the updates and pictures looks good.there are indeed two girls in the litter so we just need to make a choice.Cant wait!
Who was on the other end of those seemingly unattached legs floating in yer pool? Your neighbours' dog is a worry but it sounds like the message is filtering through to them.
How exciting Peggy! Please post some pictures of your new little girl at your visit! When I began the search for Maui, my husband wasn't really onboard yet. It was really too soon after we lost Maggie, but I began looking because I knew these things take time. So, we got our puppy a lot sooner than I think we normally would have since this litter was due in April ... born on Easter Sunday. When I read the Breeder's blog about losing one of her dogs the day before we had to put our Maggie down, we really bonded. At the time I asked her how long she would hold a Black Female for me (there were 2) and she said as long as she needed to provided someone else didn't ask for her. She said this because she told me in her gut she felt this little girl belonged to our family, so she would wait for my husband to come around! Therefore, I never got to 'choose'! But, I have to say, I think her guy feeling was right .... Maui is absolutely beautiful, has a great disposition and is so loving and sweet. I do think it was 'meant to be' for us! We keep in touch online and she tells me Maui has that Blue Black Color her grandmother had and she thinks she has her Dad's ears and Mom's nose ... I can sort of see that too. We got Maui and a good friend too ... we are very blessed indeed! Good luck in your choice .... so much fun! Please keep us posted!
Not sure which picture you're referring to, but would have to say, probably Miss Maui! LOL!! Agree on the neighbor's dog ... things are still good with us, but would also be interested to know if the poor little guy has had another seizure. I do care about ALL animals a lot!
