Hello, We are thinking of using trainer floor pads for puppies to teach our Lab puppy (when we get it) toilet training. We have hard floors and going to remove the rug on the floor and wondering if they work...what's you experience please? Thanks
Re: Trainer floor pads for Lab puppies Do you mean puppy training pads? They can be useful but my pup just used to shred them! I only put them down in her crate when I had to leave her. When I was at home I just whisked her outside every 45 mins. There is also the problem that some people have with training them to use the pads, and then having to re-train them to go outside.
Re: Trainer floor pads for Lab puppies Hi Max, I think it very much depends on your home set-up, but generally speaking its better if you can to encourage all the toileting outside where you want it right from the beginning. By using puppy pads it is sanctioning the pee inside, and probably involves a reward when the pads are used. You aren't always going to have them, so you are then going to have to teach your pup to do without them, and re-learn to only pee outside. I think some people have found them useful for using in pen areas if they have to leave their puppy during the day for any length of time. They are better than newspaper admittedly in this scenario and are less likely to be chewed up. Are you planning on using a crate? Does your pup have easy access to outside (ie not down a flight of stairs and through 3 doors)? Ooops! - Lauren beat me to saying pretty much the same thing!
Re: Trainer floor pads for Lab puppies Ok great thanks I get the idea...let the puppy get used to toileting outside instead
Re: Trainer floor pads for Lab puppies We got them and our two mainly shredded them, we trained them to go outside and found them more useful for mopping up accidents that happened when they got caught short and couldn't wait if the door was shut. They are 13 weeks now, and 99% house trained - maybe one accident a day now.
Re: Trainer floor pads for Lab puppies I agree with everyone else. If you do train them to pads, you then have to train them to go outside. There will inevitably be accidents. Buy an enzyme to remove every trace of the wee or the pup will smell it and think "this is where I should wee". Even if it is a hard floor the smell, to a dog's nose will linger. I thought I was economising by buying a large (100) box of pads, but Labs are smart dogs and she caught on very quickly, so I only used 7. Not been wasted though, my baby Grandson uses them for a naked kick about, or should that be kick a bot
Re: Trainer floor pads for Lab puppies They play with the pads, rip them up and sometimes chew and swallow them - not good! ???
