how do I get my 12 week old puppy to take a treat gently. I have tried to do it holding it in a closed fist but he bites with those little needles and it’s so painful. Any advice?
Our pup is 14 weeks and my husband has done a great job at training her. It will nip to start with but here is what he done. Hope something for her to eat - maybe start with something bigger - piece of carrot or watermelon (no seeds) and he will start to get closer to your hand. At this point say gentle, if he nips you lift the treat. Say no bite, gentle. Lower the treat and keep doing this until there is no nips. He will eventually learn that biting and nipping will mean no treats. We can now do this with the puppy kibble and she is so gentle.
Thank you. I will try lifting the treat. I thought the idea was to leave the treat in my hand in front of him but as I say it becomes too painful as he just bites at my hand.
As long as you don't take it away from his view and remove it completely he should be fine. if you put it away he will start eating them quicker as he will fear it is taken away before he can finish. Just lift and keep it in view then lower again. Good Luck!
