Hello I am new to the forum and feeling a little stressed. I am a first time puppy owner to a 12 week old puppy called Jessie. She woke up this morning and had been sick in her crate ( although I didn't notice until a bit later as was quite watery. She ate some, but not all, of her breakfast and was completely off colour. Really lethargic and sleepy and not her normal jumpy, chewy self. She vomited up her breakfast mid morning and had a couple of runny poos (sorry, tmi!?) and has been sleeping ever since. She's not interested in food (totally out of character), but is drinking. Coincidently we have a vet nurse appointment this afternoon for a worming treatment and they have said they will squeeze us in with the vet if needed. But the waiting is killing me! She is so out of sorts. I made the mistake of googling symptoms, and now feel quite stressed! She is dreadful for putting anything in her mouth, so could easily have eaten something she shouldn't. Sorry if this is a slightly pointless post as I'm sure the vet will shed light on it. But just wondering if this is common in puppies? I feel a bit clueless! Thanks for your time!
Hi there and welcome to the forum. I am sure you will have lots of more experienced owners posting soon with great advice but I just wanted to say that you are doing the right thing and I completely understand how you are feeling. It is terrifying when your little pup is not well. Especially the first time. This happened to us at about the same time. Like Jessie, tatti picks up everything in the park and unfortunately sometimes, it can leave her feeling less than great. The vets will know much more but hopefully it will just be that- something she has picked up- and after some probiotic and some sensitive food (chicken and rice is the usual here I believe) she'll be back to her bouncing self in no time. While you absolutely should go to the vet to be sure, it's probably nothing serious so don't panic, just keep an eye on her so you can tell them everything. Whenever tatti has s and d, she goes off her food and sleeps a lot. She's usually better within 48 hours. Hope she's better soon, please let us know xx
Hi there and welcome! Poor little Jessie, but this really is not uncommon in puppies. As long as she is drinking and is feeling better tomorrow, all should be well. It's good that you are seeing the vet this afternoon anyway, as you can ask about it. I definitely would not give a worming treatment on top of a tummy upset though. You say Jessie is 12 weeks old - has she just had a vaccination? I ask because that often upsets their stomachs a bit. Try not to worry too much, stay calm, and do whatever the vet tells you. I am sure it will be fine.
It is very common for small puppies to have upset tummies, from the people who post on the forum about this overwhelmingly most puppies are as right as rain again very soon. But it's good you are seeing the vet, you can't take chances with baby pups, and if it's something serious (even though normally it's not, puppies do sometimes gets serious illnesses) taking your puppy to the vet quickly is very important.
Thank you for kind posts! Feeling a bit calmer. I can't believe how worried I feel, as I have small kids and would think I would be used to this! She's awake now and has eaten a little, so I guess I'll see if this stays down. Only 2 hours until vets appointment! Thanks again. Glad to know it is reasonabley normal!
Hi and welcome, nothing to add as some good advice already given but as others have said it is not unusual in puppies, just very upsetting and worrying when it does. Please let us know how you get on at the vets and how Jessie is recovering
Hi , and welcome from me and my two dogs , I hope your Vet visit can put your mind at rest with little Jessie .
Hi and welcome, I know how you feel but you are doing the right thing getting little Jassie checked out at the vets. Do come back and let us know how you get on. There's only ever one silly question and that's the one you don't know the answer too and don't ask
Thank you for all the helpful advice! Panic over! She suddenly perked up just before we left for the vets and was life and soul of the party by the time we arrived! She's kept the food she's had down and whilst poo still not right, this is apparently normal. I feel a little foolish now, but very relieved! They think it is something she's eaten. I have the wormer to give her once she's back to normal. Thank you so much to those who replied! I shall no doubt be back with more worries and for training advice! She's currently trying to eat my son's pants out of the laundry basket, so must be feeling better!
Good to hear that it was nothing to worry about and she is feeling full of mischief again . When you have a few minutes come and tell us more about Jessie and we love puppy photos. The forum has maintained many peoples sanity and is very friendly with lots of helpful advice
Glad she's back to normal. It's not silly to worry and it's great that it turned out to be one of those minor upsets that dogs/puppies inflict on themselves. Hope the pants survived
Glad she's feeling better. It won't be the only worry and it's much better to get peace of mind rather than let the problems grow.
Pups do worry us a lot, especially in the first few months! Glad Jessie seems better Look forward to seeing puppy photos
Definitely nothing to feel foolish about, I had the same with Dexter a few weeks back and came on here to help cope with my worries whilst I waited to go to the vets. My boy was 7 months old and I don't mind saying it scared the life out of me. I think it was then that I truly realised how much I loved my boy or I should say our boy as he's my hubbies pup too I'm so pleased your pup is back to his usual puppy self.
Thanks for all replies! We ended up at the emergency vets yesterday morning as she started to poo blood. They still think just something she ate and have suggested a diet of rice and fish for a few days and gave her a probiotic paste, which seemed to work wonders. The paste (pro kolin) not on prescription, so vet suggested to keep some in and try bland diet first if it happens again! (Provided she's still lively). The emergency vets was packed with Labradors who had done silly things, so bracing myself to end up there in the future! X
Sorry to hear that Jessie has been unwell again. The fish and rice works really well - I had to feed it to Juno back in November when she had a bad vomiting but after being given a wormer by the vet ready to travel from France to the UK. Just make sure that the rice and fish are quite moist. The ProKolin is also very handy to have in the cupboard ready for those tummy upsets. There's no reason why you should end up at the emergency vets, the majority of us enjoy or dogs and never have to see the vet apart from routine checks
Had exactly the same thing with Mole this weekend - antibiotic injection, pro-kolin and chicken and rice. Worked wonders / water-poo yesterday and fine today! Scared the life out of me and the vet said it was the right thing to come in yesterday as they can get very dehydrated at this age. Mind you he was bouncy as anything at the vets and met his brother by coincidence which was fun! He was also given some electrolyte liquid which he loved - huge relief as didn't fancy syringing it down him! Pro-kolin has been my friend with all my labs Hope she's on the mend. Sam and Mole
I felt it was the wormer (panacur) that had given Mole a funny tummy but the vet said unlikely. Anyone had that effect with worming meds? Of course it could easily have been something he ate as however much I try to keep an eye he always seems to find something in the garden to munch on! Was on my hands and knees in the frost yesterday trying to find all the half buried plum stones from last years crop that he seems to find very exciting ! At least he will now drop for a treat!!
