How many types of bark have you noticed from your dog? Nero has 2 very distinctive barks.... The very high pitched bark, almost a scream, which is very painful on the ears! - This is when he wants attention and wants to play!!! The other bark is very low pitched and is sometimes followed by a growl.....He sometimes does this when he sees people outside the front of our house...i suppose its a warning to them not to enter! He also makes various other whinning noises when he is getting attention which are quite funny!
Re: Types of bark Excited/play bark. Cross/annoyed bark. Alert/alarm bark. I think that's all I recognise in my two so far
Re: Types of bark Think we've got 3 Excited/ the door bells gone/having a great time barking ....ie tail wagging and big smiley face at same time : Alert / alarm low wuff ,just the one if he hears a noise outside or I'm late coming down in the morning ie 5.10 am not 5 am Back off stranger trying to kill my Mum bark....starts as a rumbly growl and goes into short repetitive barks
Re: Types of bark We only really have two - The "Back off stranger trying to kill my Mum bark" thanks Angela..... And the I'm so excited to be chasing this deer in my dream bark
Re: Types of bark 1. "OMG my daycare people are here to pick me up" 2. "OMG my favourite parcel delivery man has arrived" 3. Barking just in case 1 or 2 might randomly occur 4. "Unknown persons are walking past our property!!!" 5. "Hey, you, dog over there!! Who the hell are you? Get here now and say hi!! Now!!" 6. "OMG we have just arrived at the dog park" 7. "OMG we have just arrived at the dog club" 8. "What is that killer animal crouching by the path??? Oh, it's a branch, I knew that" 9. "Human, I'm bored. Entertain me" 10. "Dog, I want to play with you. Start running so I can chase you!" 11. "Human, I want to lick the Le Creuset that you just made risotto in. Get it for me. Yes I mean right now" ...anyway, we get a lot of barking. Don't start me about the whining.
Re: Types of bark Ah, Obi! ;D ;D ;D We mostly have monster chasing dream barks, but we also have a strange, tortured, whine-nearly-approaching-bark when "it's not your turn" for fetching dummies. Or when Barbara walks away with the bag containing dummies, as I found out yesterday. : : :
Re: Types of bark Tatze has a 'nearly bark' huff which she uses when she needs to go out for the loo.
Re: Types of bark Fab! ;D ;D ;D We don't have a bark here....(we?) but a lovely deep WOOF! which I love, he is awfully pleased with himself when he does a WOOF!
Re: Types of bark How old is Benson. Lady was over a year old before she discovered she could bark and she did an alarm bark at a strange noise - just a single woof. We were all most surprised. She has two barks. Her general alarm bark where she pretty much insists that we investigate and she only does it in the house or sometimes in the garden. Then there is the "Don't come near me bark" and she stands on her hind legs if we are out and someone, or a group of people look suspicious in the distance. I worry a bit about this bark because she looks aggressive even though she isn't.

Re: Types of bark Holly has an alarm bark with lots of listening in between occasional barks. She also barks with her mouth closed when she's dreaming. She's rather a quiet dog, really.
Re: Types of bark Obi is just hilairious....I still chuckle at him possibly having 'shouty ' words with the opposing team when he gets his Flyball run out....in fact let's be honest it's a probability rather than a possibility isn't it! You tell 'em Obi! X
Re: Types of bark Pongo only has two so far I think. The 'chasing rabbits in my dreams' bark, and the 'frustrated want to play and can't' bark. A friend came to visit a couple of days ago with her very old, arthritic spaniel, Rowan. Pongo was (IMHO) amazingly well behaved - terribly excited and desperately wanting to play, but not once actually touching the older dog. But lots and lots and LOTS of tail wagging, puppy bows, bouncing round and round and round, running to fetch his toys and offering them to Rowan, and absolutely INCESSANT barking... Never heard him do anything like that before. He simply couldn't understand why Rowan didn't want to play!
Re: Types of bark Fortunately Harvey rarely barks (quickly touches wood!). There are only two types: 1. A fairly mild 'frustration' bark. He's done this twice when he's managed to shove his Kong bone through the bars of his crate and then can't get at it! : 2. A very loud, low, deep 'if you come into my house uninvited there's a good chance that I may eat you' bark. I remember seeing on a wildlife documentary that a lion's roar is so powerful that if you are close by you don't just hear it, you feel it, and it is truly terrifying. When I first heard Harvey do this bark I was right next to him, facing away from him, and it scared the *#@% out of me!
