Walking Shadow this morning, and a local farmer's two Brittany spaniels rushed over. They're not well socialised dogs; they're penned outside all day and bark ferociously when you walk past them, but I've never bumped into them outside of their enclosure. Anyway, one ran back immediately to go into its pen, but the other wouldn't leave Shadow. It wasn't being aggressive, but Shadow was very, very submissive towards it and obviously uncomfortable. The farmer came over and tried to move it away with his stick. Not hitting, but basically trying to lever it away, which I didn't like in the first instance, but when the dog didn't respond, he picked it up by the scruff. The dog was squealing and squealing, poor thing! I huffed and said "That's not necessary!!" but then had to attend to Shadow, who was clearly distressed by the noise the other dog was making, so we walked off quickly. I know that lots of farmers are old school and see their dogs as tools, but I don't understand how someone can be so heartless as to cause an animal so much pain.
Re: Ugh, some people are just horrible! Oh thats awful, what a horrid thing to witness, poor dogs too. xx
Re: Ugh, some people are just horrible! How awful for you and the dogs. Hope you are now recovered. We seem to be lucky here in rural France with dogs, although most of the dogs are left in the garden or dog enclosure all day (lots of hunting dogs) and bark like mad when they see/hear Juno if they are actually out in the lanes they are well behaved and want to make friends with Juno which she loves. Juno is still very submissive when she meets other dogs in fact on Friday at the vet clinic she managed to wee on the floor twice, once when we arrived and once just before we left, when greeting strange dogs. That said she loves playing and running with her doggy friends.
Re: Ugh, some people are just horrible! The farmer needs grabbing round the scruff, see if he likes it, just awful, poor dog :'( :'(
Re: Ugh, some people are just horrible! I echo Ternaya's comment. Some people just do not deserve the privilege of dogs in their lives.
