In today's paper there's an article about research by a Dr Ostojic on whether or not dogs can feel guilty: '... guilty-looking behaviour could stem from distress rather than a blackened conscience.' Apparently for a client with three dogs it was always one dog who looked guilty, but 'often she was not the dog who had done it. She was just the most timid dog and got frightened more quickly by her owner's reaction.' I thought of that photo of Shadow when I read it - not that he's distressed or timid or frightened, he's just perfecting the 'if I look guilty, nobody could possibly think it's me' look! He's trying to distract you from the evidence on Willow's nose!
