Hi everyone. We have a gorgeous 11 week old black lab puppy who is doing brilliantly. Our problem is our old terrier, who’s 13 is terribly unsettled at night. He’s doing ok in the day, and getting used to the pup, but at night, he just barks and wants to stay out in the garden, and we can’t get him in! He’s lived with another dog before and was fine. The puppy is quiet all night so it’s not that that’s disturbing him. He just won’t settle in his bed. They are both in the same room as it’s our ‘dog room’ off the kitchen and I’m loathed to start moving crates or beds as we really want them to use that as their room. It’s always worked in the past with our other dogs, but this old boy is not happy! Any thoughts would be gratefully received! Many thanks!

Hi Linda, welcome to the forum :)

I'm sorry your older dog is feeling unsettled. It sounds like, one way or another, the kindest thing is to give you old boy a completely separate space to sleep in, at least for the time being. This article on our main site has more advice from an experienced trainer about establishing friendly relations between a puppy and an older dog.

Good luck, and do let us know how you get on!
