Our poor little puppy, Bailey has Kennel Cough. He is 12 weeks old tomorrow and the only dogs he has been near are the ones at his puppy class. He has been vaccinated and is beyond the exclusion period so I don't know where he picked it up. The poor little thing has an awful cough and has been to the vet this evening. It's very worrying but the vet prescribed oral antibiotics and gave Bailey an injection of antibiotics tonight. He is very sleepy and looks so very sad. Here's hoping he gets better quickly. He's such a young little chap and it doesn't seem fair.
Poor Bailey - it's horrible listening to them hack and feeling helpless, but he should pick up in a couple of days, do hope so.
Hope he is well soon! Our very first lab was 5 month old when she got kennel cough. She probably drank contaminated water. We gave her some cough syrup for babies which helped her with her ease her throat. Perhaps a tip? Annemarie
That is such a shame, the poor wee mite. Kennel cough is just an umbrella term for an "upper respiratory infection" though I think, so there are lots of different bugs that could cause it. The nastiest and commonest I guess are in the vaccine, but it doesn't cover everything. Just like you, if you were to get the Flu vaccine, it wouldn't stop you getting a normal cold or a mild fluey illness. Its awful to watch them cough/puke. I think some people give baby Benylin but I have no idea how much. A spoonful of honey I believe can help too.
Thanks to you all. He is a little better this morning but still tired and flat. At least his tail wag is back! I have begun his oral antibiotics and I'm hoping he continues to improve. Thanks again, Ill try the honey to help his throat.
Poor Bailey, glad to hear he is a bit better this morning, fingers crossed things continue to improve and he is back to puppy playfulness again soon!!
Well, he likes the honey! He takes his antibiotic in a spoon of honey without any problem. He also has his appetite back. I think he's on the mend, thanks for all the good wishes.
