Well, off we went today to see Graeme the orthopod. Good news is he agrees it is bicipital tenosynovitis and there is no OCD or ED. Bad news - she is more lame than most of the dogs he sees with this and is going in tomorrow for depot steroid injections under anaesthetic. This sorts about 75% of them out, the rest need surgery and around 5% never improve. He recommends strict rest for at least three months. I have no idea how I am going to accomplish strict rest with two young dogs in a three storey house (no stair work - luckily she's only 24 kg...) and all the hoolies that life normally involves for the pair of them. Also Tarka is obsessive about going out and gets a minimum of two hours a day normally. Ho hum, a very different life is about to start for Tarka and Lochan......

Lochan ,I'm so sorry,I've already said so on another post.Could you take her into work with you and crate her comfortably there with you?you could supervise her rest then .That would separate them and Lochan could have a normal routine.....the same that you would usually have with their care when you are about your normal day...
Im so sorry you have this worry x

Poor tarka and poor lochan not having somebody to race about with and poor you. :(

You never know by the end of 3 months she might have got used to being a pampered pooch and decide she doesn't like racing around muddy fields. ;)

    I doubt it. ;D

    Good luck

Re: UPDATE 27/11 - Resting for the shoulder tendon injury in Tarka

Well today is day 1 of rest for Tarka. Unfortunately she does not see it that way and was bouncing about as usual this morning ready for her walk. So, instead of leaving her behind while I took Lochie out (I'm such a wuss I just couldn't do it to her) I took her with me. We got to the farm by car, Lochie was released and Tarka was carried by me (much to her surprise) down to the main part of the field. It must have been quite a sight, a short middle aged woman in Barbour and wellies staggering down the hill carrying an obviously healthy 25kg labrador but the things we do for love.....Anyway, I then decided to train for steadiness in both the dogs. Tarka was placed in the field with a large chew whilst I trained Lochie with some dummies. Worked really well as Tarka would rather have the dummies so having to lie down even with a chew was good training, whilst Lochie, the greediest dog in the world, would rather have the chew so had to ignore it and work with the dummies. I then heel walked Tarka about 200m to the river whilst Lochie had some free time, then used the very gently sloping beach into the slowly flowing river for some free hydrotherapy for Tarka after some dummies. Heel walk another 200m then carried up the hill to the car (I was puffing quite a bit by then, it's a fair old workout). Seemed to work well, she was happy cos she got out but no major tearing about and I can still exercise Lochie to stop her turning into a blimp. Obviously this wouldn't work if she had undergone surgery when as little movement as possible is vital but this really seemed to make her think she had been exercised even though she hadn't, so two snoozing labradors in the house just now. They go with me to work anyway so the rest of the day will be spent snoozing in the office with the other staff pets (hoolies banned at work for obvious reason anyway). Success without too much drama, so all good. Think I can manage this for a few months if my back holds out.....

Wow - that sounds brilliant for Tarka, but goodness quite a workout for you! If you manage ok with it, you could probably successfully do the army training physical assessment!!

that sounds great.....carried to food then carried to a swim then carried home - I'd go for that :)

take care of your back though maybe she needs some kind of off road buggy!

Ooh an off-road buggy - I hadn't thought of that - a friend has one of those bike tugalong things for kids he used to put his old lab in when they went mountain biking. Might see if I can borrow it....

Crikey, I would struggle to carry Murffi who weighs about 15 kg for any length of time. The thought of carrying Ziggy the Clumber who is probably about 27 kg is mind boggling! ::) :D ;D

That is a really good suggestion and could really work for you,3 months is a long time, you only need to slip with her as well to really give both of you a good wallop :( x

I am so impressed by your dedication, but I agree with the others, you definitely need something on wheels to put her in, or you are going to end up injuring yourself!

Despite it being rest day it sounds lots of fun. :D

Could you use a wheel barrow to take her down the field there's bound to be one on a farm?

My neighbour had a dog buggy for her old spaniel when he got bad with his legs. I think some are quite reasonably priced considering but you hopefully won't need it after 3 month (I touched wood) .

Tugalong sorted for tomorrow, Tarka will ride gracefully in her carriage down the track to the field. My back heaves a sigh of relief but it wasn't a huge problem this morning - they breed us hardy in Scotland.....
