Piper went down to Dublin this morning for her surgery. She had a medial coronoid fragmentation. she's had removal of the fragment and a biceps ulner release procedure on her right elbow. she's on restricted exercise for 3 weeks. the surgeon is confident it will be successful. her left elbow is 'suspicious' but as long as we try and control the speed of her growth (she's got big, quick) he's hopeful the left won't need doing xx

Get well soon, Piper! It's great that the surgeon was happy with it and that the recovery time is not really long.

How are you feeling about it all?

Pleased to hear that all went well today, fingers crossed that the left elbow doesn't need any surgery. Not quite sure how you stop your dog growing too quickly, some seem to,put on spurts of growth, others grow at a steadier pace. What's Piper's restricted exercise regime? After her op Juno was on 3 x 3 minutes per day for two weeks followed by vey slow increase. She's looking quite alert for having a GA earlier today but I expect she's fallen asleep again by now.

Sending you hugs (I expect you're feeling quite shattered) and Juno sends healing licks to Piper and says to tell her she must be a good girl and try and sty quiet while her elbow heals and she'll soon be able to do zoomies again :)

I feel great!!! so much better now its done. xxx
she's on confinement to a 2m x 2m room with toilet breaks for 2-3 weeks. then 3 times a day, for a few minutes for a couple of weeks. i'm looking into hydrotherapy for her as since the 16th there's been some muscle deterioration in her right leg.
thank you all so much for your thoughts and kind words, it means a lot
    xxx

re the rate control, she has to have the bare minimum of kibble for her weight? i nodded and smiled. lol xx she was the biggest in her litter, and she gets the bare minimum anyway.

It's good to hear that you're feeling OK, it's such a hard day when they have surgery.

Hydrotherapy is a great idea. Juno was allowed to start a course as soon as the wound was healed. Our centre in France was very basic but the hydrotherapist was brilliant. 30 minutes massage split into a session before and after and 30 minutes in the pool with lots of rest between activities. Juno also had some muscle wasting but it improved very quickly.

You will need to keep a close eye on her waistline while on the restricted exercise as it is very easy for them to put on weight quicker than normal. I forgot until my vet mentioned that Juno was looking a bit heavier than normal, totally my fault as I took my eye off the ball with everything else going on around her care and recovery :rolleyes:

Just catching up after Christmas so pleased all has gone well. I find hydrotherapy amazing for Mabel. It's well worth researching and giving it a go. For me I also find the hydrotherapist incredibly supportive as Mabel certainly has more than her fair share of problems.
Fingers crossed Piper continues to do well in 2016. I'm sure she will.
