When he first told me said she had long hair like a retriever so I think that would be cute black lab golden retriever but today said she looked like Maltese which is not what I want I want decent size lab type dog so got me a bit confused.

Well Maltese are tiny so I don't think she's going to turn out like a Maltese. My guess would be that he meant her coat and cuteness as a puppy resemble a Maltese right now - not that she will grow up to look like a Maltese. From the pics we've seen so far I'd expect that they'd grow up to be dogs about the size of a Labrador, but it's a bit hard to tell as we don't have many reference points in the pics you've put up. Do you have any photos of them with their mother? That'd let us see how big they are relative to her.

Unfortunately it's a gamble when you don't know anything about the father.

I actually have a liking for small scruffy looking dogs However , as you say that you want a puppy that will grow to look like a Labrador , isn't this a bit of a gamble for you ? I`m afraid that without knowing the breed or type of both parents, it is very difficult to predict what the pups will look like as adult dogs , good luck .

If you really want a pup that looks like a labrador, why don't you pick one of the smooth haired ones instead? They do look a lot like labrador puppies (as far as one can tell at this point).

Unfortunately there is no guarantee what your pup will look like as an adult base upon puppy looks. From all the puppy photos I've seen puppies generally look alike when they are tiny; it's only as they grow and develop that you see differences. I think most of our puppies looked pretty much the same as puppies but they all have their own individual looks, sizes etc. and that's when they are purebred.

Although your pup may not look so much like a lab as it get's older it's coat will have more of a lab look.

It's virtually impossible to tell what size an adult will be from a young pup. My sister and I both have bitch pups from the same breeder. Mine weighed a whopping 5.5kg at 7 weeks and was a seriously big pup. My sisters pup weighed 1kg at 8 weeks. Both pure bred labradors. Both are now as adults almost identical in size and shape and both weigh 25kg.

What does the mother look like? The breeder says she's pure Lab but now it sounds like she's not?

The try not to worry so much about it. You will love whatever puppy you choose. What is there not to love in a puppy?!
