Hi , this is for pippa so I hope I am on the right site . I have got your book on total recall so I can train my two year old black lab Alfie . On the first exercise do I just blow my whistle with 5 pips when Alfie comes to me and not again whilst I give him his premium treats ?

Hi Tony, and welcome to the forum :) You are indeed on the right site.

Are you on chapter 10 pre-recall for older dogs? If so, just give one recall whistle (string of pips) as you feed, and give several chunks of food. Repeat several times a day. You don't need to whistle for each chunk of food, but it isn't the end of the world if this is what you have done. :)

    Does that answer your question?

    Hi Pippa,

That link seems to be broken ???

Harvey certainly comes back PDQ when he hears the recall whistle and we've only recently started using it after using verbal commands to start with. We haven't finished Total Recall yet (we have the basics but still have to do the all important proofing, especially with people and dogs) but the whistle certainly seems useful - I suspect it is even more valuable for longer distance recalls when we might struggle to give verbal commands (although I'm sure there are some whose voice is a match for any whistle ;) ).

Hi pippa , I am still in the total recall , on the part of different rooms . The whistle is working in the house but my main problem is when I go to my agility class Alfie will try and run out off the ring when the next class of dogs arrive . I don't use the whistle outside at the minute so the only way to get him back is to shout nicely at him to return also tempting him with liver cake , he will also run to the trainer instead of clearing his jumps . It is getting a bit embarrassing as it seems he is not interested in me so I am at a lose at the minute . Any tips , HELP !!!
