Ash turned 12 weeks old today. He had his 2nd vaccinations 11 days ago. I was told it needed to be a full two weeks before he could go out but he's going stir crazy. Due to family ill health he's not been out of the house apart from one half hour puppy class & the vets as everyone we could visit is ill or in hospital. He's now 11kg and too heavy to carry. Do you think it would be a risk to take him out before Monday? Thanks Carnie x
Re: Vaccination Question Hello there So sorry to hear about your family illness, I hope things are picking up now. There is an article here on the dilemma of keeping a puppy at home vs getting it out and about: http://www.thelabradorsite.com/labrador-puppies-is-it-safe-to-take-your-puppy-out/ No-one can make the decision about what risks to take apart from you - and your vet, who knows the risks in your local area. Although my own view is that if your puppy has been in the house the whole time since 8 weeks, it's probably now very urgent to get him out and about for socialisation. You might have to find a way to transport him though, he won't know how to walk on a lead (unless you've had time to train that but it sounds like you might have had you hands full). You could try a baby sling? Even if you just get him to the pub/bus stop/park bench/school gates and sit down that's better than nothing.
Re: Vaccination Question Very interesting article thanks. Like a lot of books and articles it says you should wait a week after the 2nd vaccination, that's why I was so surprised the vet said 2 weeks. I was hoping to take him round the block this weekend with the kids (to take their mind off granny in hospital) but I might wait till Monday which will be 2 weeks since he had it. Ash has been practicing walking on a harness as the puppy class lent us one whilst we wait for our cosy dogs one to arrive. I have three kids and Ash has had about 15 visitors so at least he's been able to meet people. He did sit shaking at puppy class for 5 mins before joining in so I'm hoping he won't be scared of outside. Thanks x
Re: Vaccination Question Vets do seem to vary in their advice. When I had my last pup in 98, I followed the advice to wait 2 weeks after 2nd jab, but with Molly last October the same vet said only one week. But actually I took Molly out on a lead before this - I was just a bit careful about only meeting dogs I knew had been vaccinated.
Re: Vaccination Question I had different advice from 2 vets at the same surgery. I have been very careful to carry Chepi but I have taken her out most days. After she had her second jabs I was told to wait a week and then not to go swimming for another week.
Re: Vaccination Question My vet who has been my vet for 20 years encouraged to get her out early. Manage the risks so don't head for public spaces but go where you know there are vaccinated dogs (as best to your knowledge) only. Meg was out an about from the moment we got her at 8 weeks. She went all over meeting other pooches, other gardens and lots of car time. She is now 20 weeks and is a totally chilled unfazed dog. I guess you need to know the incidence of disease in your area but get your pup out to somewhere you can be reasonably confident of minimal risks. A dog trainer once said to me it's important to balance the risks of getting a disease against a life time of problems due to poor early socialisation. Have fun,
Re: Vaccination Question I was advised 7 days after second jabs, but I have to admit I started taking Penny out a couple of days after as she was getting really antsy and j felt she needed to be getting some proper exercise. I think as long as you are sensible and cautious there's no reason why you can't start taking your pup out now. I reckon vets generally err on the side of caution anyway and sometimes recommend longer than is strictly necessary, knowing that people are bound to take them out before.
Re: Vaccination Question The number of weeks after the second injection you can let your pups out depends entirely on the brand of vaccine used and the age at which the second vaccination is given. Local factors which your vet will be aware of, such as the incidence of a particular disease in your area, will also influence their advice. Keep safe, have fun and enjoy the puppy days!
Re: Vaccination Question Thanks everyone. He was vaccinated two Monday's ago so we have decided we are taking him for his first walk tomorrow morning before we have lots of my husbands family arriving with a baby. It will only be a day early but I will keep him away from other dogs & poo. I think it would be best if he's tired out as a family member he hasn't met it looking after him in the afternoon as our planned puppy sitter is in hospital. We are performing in the York Mystery Plays (the medieval wagon plays) so family are coming to see us. My vet is recommending a 3rd parvo vaccination at 16 weeks. Has anyone else been given that advice or is it just the York (UK) area? Carnie x
Re: Vaccination Question I was never offered that, however it can vary by area. Your vet might have heard that there's been a few parvo cases in the area recently and just wants to take extra precautions?
Re: Vaccination Question Yes, they did say there had been some cases. I wondered if it was all over the UK or just in certain areas.
Re: Vaccination Question It sounds like the extra shot may be because of the local outbreak of Parvo , but have fun with your puppy , its so important to socialise them when very young , enjoy the weekends escapades

In fact, they are not allowed on grass until then!
Re: Vaccination Question This came up before. Here it is:
Routine vaccinations at 8 and 10/12 weeks are the norm, but current WSAVA guidelines are to repeat the parvovirus component at 16 weeks to catch the small (but significant) minority of pups which do not develop immunity to parvovirus at 8 and 10/12 weeks. I have vaccinated all my own pups at 8, 12 and 16 weeks, but got them out and about on fields, beaches etc from 13 weeks (low risk parvo areas). It may be of interest to point out that the last 4 cases of clinical parvovirus infection we have seen in our practice have all been in pups between 6-12 months of age who have had 2 parvo vaccines as puppies finishing at 10-12 weeks of age.
Re: Vaccination Question Last night at puppy class we met a new owner who brought in their 10 week old golden retriever pup. We all go to the same vet practice chain but we are at different local branches. The new family were told they only needed to wait one week after the 2nd vaccinations but the rest of us were told 2 weeks. So I think they must be using different vaccine combinations or just give different advice depending on which vet you get. They were also told to get a 3rd parvo jab at 16weeks but some of the others were not told about that. I did wait the full two weeks in the end as I thought it was silly to risk it. Ash has been going on lots of walks all week long and is loving it. I've been taking him out for a full hour each time as he doesn't seem to get tired at all. We are not going too far but he is a slow walker as he wants to smell everything. He only pulls on the lead on the way home when we get just round the corner from our house, but he hates going back inside as he would like us to be out all day I have been following this forum's advice and have been letting him off lead in a quiet field. He is happy for me to clip him back on the lead so I do that if I see any other dogs or people about. He loves people & cyclists and gets all upset if they don't stop and say hello when we are on the way there. This is from this morning....
